skins are used for luxury leather handbags , wallets and other products that are sold all over the world , intentionally making invisible the cruelty used to obtain them . Some 30,000 crocodile skins are exported illegally every year .
The report " World leather trade in 2021 " of the CNC ( National Leather Council ) points out that Spain is the sixth largest exporter of raw hides and skins in the world , accumulating 4.3 % of foreign sales of this product in 2021 . Likewise , our country is the twelfth largest importer of this product , accumulating 1.6 % of the total .
As for tanning , Spain is the ninth largest exporter of tanned leather in the world , accounting for 3.1 % of foreign sales of this product in 2021 , and the thirteenth largest importer of this product , accounting for 2.5 % of the total .
With regard to leather footwear , Spain is the world ' s eighth largest exporter of leather shoes , accumulating 2.1 % of foreign sales of this product in 2021 , and the ninth largest importer of this product , accumulating 2.7 % of the total .
What ' s behind a fur coat ?
Worldwide , the fur industry annually kills around 28 million animals from fur farms . To this figure should be added another 8 million caught in traps and snares . Depending on the type of animal , to manufacture a single fur coat it is necessary to kill : 15-20 foxes , 60-80 minks , 27-30 raccoons , 60-100 squirrels , 12-15 lynxes , 15-20 dogs , 25-45 lambs , 6-10 seals . Of special note is the case of astrakhan fur from Karakul lambs in Afghanistan , which are killed immediately after birth , when their fur is in optimal condition .
According to data from Alternativa para la Liberación Animal ( ALA ), 400,000 minks are bred in captivity each year in Spain . All are born in April and die in November . Although there is no official census , they estimate that there are about 50 farms in Galicia and 20 in the rest of the country , 80 % of the mink are bred in Galician farms . These animals have an average lifespan of 6 months , compared to the 6 years they would live in the wild .
However , the latest status report published by the Ministry of Agriculture states that there are 26 active American mink breeding farms in Spain , 24 of conjunto de la sociedad , pero reviste una gran transcendencia .
Cada año , la industria del cuero mundial mata a más de 1.000 millones de animales y aprovecha parte de su cuerpo para curtir sus pieles . Muchos de esos animales sufren todo tipo de maltrato , incluyendo amontonamientos , confinamientos extremos , carencias , castración , marcación , mutilaciones sin anestesia y tratamiento cruel durante el transporte y la matanza .
El cuero suele justificarse de cara a la opinión pública como un “ residuo ” de la industria de la carne . De esta manera se intenta dulcificar una realidad que dista enormemente de esta afirmación , puesto que gran parte proviene de animales sacrificados principalmente para la obtención de sus pieles .
La industria del cuero se abastece de una enorme variedad de especies entre las que se encuentran principalmente vacas , cabras , cerdos , ovejas , corderos , caballos , ciervos , canguros , serpientes , caimanes e incluso elefantes . En el caso de China , el principal país exportador de cuero del mundo seguido de Tailandia y Filipinas , se “ despellejan ” anualmente unos dos millones de perros y gatos , destinados a la confección de todo tipo de objetos para el comercio como muñecos , llaveros , juguetes para niños y animales , entre otros . La piel de estos objetos es identificada bajo seudónimos para ocultar su procedencia real .
En los países más evolucionados ya no es tan frecuente encontrar situaciones de crueldad extrema hacia los animales destinados a la industria peletera . Sin embargo , en los menos respetuosos sí resulta todavía habitual encontrarse procedimientos tan “ increíbles ” y crueles como el “ despelleje ” de cocodrilos vivos , sometiéndolos a varias horas de dolorosa agonía antes de morir finalmente . Sus pieles son utilizadas para bolsos de cuero de lujo , carteras y otros productos que se venden por todo el mundo , invisibilizando intencionadamente la crueldad empleada para su obtención . Anualmente se exportan ilegalmente unas 30.000 pieles de cocodrilo .
El informe “ El comercio mundial del cuero en 2021 ” del CNC ( Consejo Nacional del Cuero ) señala que España es el sexto mayor exportador mundial de pieles y cueros en bruto , acumulando en 2021 el 4,3 % de las ventas al exterior de este producto . Igualmente , nuestro país es el duodécimo mayor importador de este producto , acumulando el 1,6 % del total .
