topped with large decorative cups and open or enclosed
iron balconies (viewpoints). The houses were
painted in one colour according to each owners preference,
giving the streets a heterogeneous appearance,
or conversely they were tiled with ceramics in
either different designs or in two colours, providing
owners the ease of not having to paint the facade.
However, the most important feature resides in the
‘clue’ placed in the centre point of semi-circular archways.
As there was no titled nobility or heraldic
shields to give status or to symbolise each family,
the new “wealthy” classes took on the custom of
engraving the initials of the owner’s first name and
surname, together with the year of construction on
to each property. Today, this detail is used to easily
locate the families that ordered these buildings to be
constructed on census records. The styles: colonial,
eclectic, modernist.
Diverse origins
The families that inhabited these houses, like all
La Lineans, were from different places, and continued
to develop marital ties with people of different
nationalities. From the neighbouring sister city of Gibraltar,
it was common practice among its merchant
bourgeoisie, to build their urban mansion or palazzo
in La Línea, given the lack of space in the colony. As
was the case of Francisco Carreras Gómez, whose
home, built in 1870 in the current Plaza de la Constitución,
contained an English style entrance gate,
together with stables at the Plaza de Cruz Herrera.
This family was linked to our most short-lived mayor,
José Peón Fernández, serving in the post until his
passing (from 1st to 2nd of February 1872). Bartolomé
Lima Ortiz, from the Levantine coast, (specifically
from Estepona), arrived at the age of four and married
Emilia Romero Montes (a native of Gibraltar).
They were the owners of what is now called Casa de
Villar, which was built in 1894 on Calle Real and the
businessowners of the now disappeared theatres
of Cómico and Pascualini (where years later, Amato
would build his Chalet). Yet another example, straight
from the heart of La Mancha, Ruperto Toledano
Fernández and his family settled in the south to further
increase their wealth and built one of the more
ornate houses in 1900, on the corner of the Plaza
The next
