sibilities and resources that Gibraltar offered, thus
creating a small hamlet, “La Línea de Gibraltar.” Led
by a small-town mayor directed by the municipal city
of San Roque, it consisted of modest houses built
next to the customs gates (the current Plaza de la
Constitución) and the only land access point to the
British city. In 1862, a Royal Decree prohibited the
construction and repair of masonry houses in La
Línea and Campamento, hampering the aspirations
of the merchant bourgeoisie to use the wealth they
accrued through work and commerce to live in decent
houses. These issues and the abandonment of
the city of San Roque lead to 330 residents, with
the support of the head of the provincial progressive
monarchist party, José González de la Vega of
Algeciras, to request segregation and to form their
own municipality, an aspiration which was resolved
in their favour through a decree from the regent, General
Francisco Serrano Domínguez, on 17th January
1870, thus giving birth to the most illustrious village
of “La Linea de la Concepcion”, named in honour of
the patron saint of infantry.
Typology and characteristics
In the minutes books from sessions conducted by
the municipal corporation dating back to the 1870s,
which are now housed in the document collection
of the Francisco Tornay Municipal Historical Archive,
we can find the first requests from residents to build
their houses, that would have been accompanied by
plans (which unfortunately are not preserved).
The typical La Linean house has two floors, although
there are also some with only one. In general,
typological features can be divided in to three different
categories according to their layout, the first
consisting of an open air central courtyard on which
the upper floor has a gallery where from each room
accessed, the second with a central courtyard closed
off by an iron and glass skylight to protect from
the rain but allowing natural light to enter, and the
third type with a patio at one end or along one of its
sides. Materials used were of good quality, such as
sandstone used for arches over both doors and windows
and even for the corbels that support balconies
or viewpoints. The ashlars used in corners (adaraja)
made of brick, spalls (small irregular stones) galletting
the remaining walls, balconies with balustrades
