DRIVING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE WITH BASSADONE
OTWO Magazine was invited by The Bassadone Automotive Group to attend a special“ Driving a Sustainable Future” Engagement Group meeting in late May, showcasing the impressive work the company has done, and continues to do, to position itself as a sustainable business in Gibraltar.
The event was opened by Martin Figueras, Facilities and Sustainability Director, who welcomed guests and introduced the team leading Bassadone’ s Sustainability journey: Rachel Goodman Fox( Corporate Sustainability Lead), Nicole Stevens( People Director), and Professor Daniella Tilbury( Sustainability Consultant). Attendees included representatives from various organisations across Gibraltar.
The session served as a platform to highlight Bassadone’ s commitment to embedding sustainability across every aspect of its operations— not only through environmental initiatives, but also as a core part of its corporate culture. As Mr Figueras explained, sustainability is driven from the top, with the board mandating that it be integrated into every role across the company.
The presentation also traced Bassadone’ s long history. Founded in 1904, it has grown from a small shop in Gibraltar’ s Main Street into a major international vehicle distributor, with operations across Finland, Baltics, Spain and the UK. Its two main divisions are Bassadone North( retail & distribution) and Bassadone South( retail, distribution, humanitarian aid and property rentals), headquartered in Gibraltar. A standout aspect of Bassadone’ s impact is its humanitarian work through Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings( TGS). The company supplies specially adapted vehicles for disaster response worldwide, including the rapid deployment of vehicles to Nepal within 48 hours of a major earthquake. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bassadone’ s mechanics were among the few workers officially classified as emergency responders.
On the sustainability front, Bassadone has made notable progress. Solar panels now power most of the site’ s operations, with any surplus energy returned to the Gibraltar grid. Waste is carefully segregated, and the company has undertaken major efforts to preserve the historic features of its site— originally built between 1898 and 1904-with expert restoration of cranes, flooring, and windows.
The Group also prioritises employee wellbeing, employing over 1,000 staff from 18 nationalities. Bassadone operations in Gibraltar achieved the Investors in People Platinum accreditation. Operations in the North( Bassadone Automotive Nordic) were recognised as the 7 th Great Place to Work, amongst all large companies operating in Finland. Professional and committed staff is the cornerstone of Bassadone’ s success, everywhere they operate.
Rachel Goodman Fox presented the governance model underpinning Bassadone’ s sustainability strategy, approved by the board in late 2024. Developed through extensive consultation and a Double Materiality Assessment, the strategy outlines clear targets across HR, finance, marketing, facilities, and IT. Commitments include implementing circular eco-
