Following the brilliant success of the Good Friday cycle in April, cyclists once again took to Gibraltar’ s roads to celebrate World Bicycle Day and to raise awareness of the need for safer cycling conditions on the Rock.
As a bonus, the cycle also fell on World Environment Day, promoting the additional need to encourage greener transport alternatives in an ever traffic-congested and polluted town.
After weeks of preparation, the event, organised by OTWO and the Gibraltar Cycling Association, kicked off at casemates square on the morning of Saturday 5th June.
Clubs, businesses, families and individuals of all ages came together to show their support, resulting in an incredible turnout. Hundreds of cyclists gathered ahead of the cycle to mingle, attach safer cycling flags to their bikes and demonstrate their numbers to the regular Saturday morning crowd in Casemates.
Just before the cycle was due to begin, the cyclists got ready at the start line and were joined by Chris Nuñez, Head of the Gibraltar Cycling Association, who addressed the crowd, thanking everyone for their support.
Minister for Transport Vijay Daranyani also showed his support by joining the cyclists at Casemates to mark the start of the cycle route.
At 11:30, everyone was off. Avid and amateur cyclists, couples, friends, entire families, young children and teenagers made their way up the short hill by the ICC and turned left onto Line Wall Road.
Over 200 cyclists temporarily took over Gibraltar’ s roads, safer cycling flags waving as they made their way along the pre-planned route. The colourful and excited procession waved at passers-by as they headed southbound towards Trafalgar Cemetery, down towards Ragged Staff and southbound along Queensway. After a brief stop at the small boat harbour, where a drone provided by Drone Air took some incredible ariel footage of the crowd, the throng of cyclists continued down Europort Road towards Winston Churchill Avenue. Finally, they turned east along Devil’ s Tower Road and onwards to the finish at Sandy Bay.

Tras el brillante éxito de la bici del Viernes Santo en abril, los ciclistas volvieron a tomar las carreteras de Gibraltar para celebrar el Día Mundial de la Bicicleta y concienciar sobre la necesidad de unas condiciones más seguras para los ciclistas en el Peñón.
Como ventaja, el ciclo también cayó en el Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente, promoviendo la necesidad adicional de fomentar alternativas de transporte más ecológicas en una ciudad cada vez más congestionada por el tráfico y la contaminación.
Tras semanas de preparación, el evento, organizado por la OTWO y la Asociación Ciclista de Gibraltar, arrancó en la plaza de Casemates la mañana del sábado 5 de junio.
Clubes, empresas, familias y personas de todas las edades se reunieron para mostrar su apoyo, lo que dio lugar a una increíble participación. Cientos de ciclistas se reunieron antes de la carrera para mezclarse, colocar banderas de ciclismo seguro en sus bicicletas y demostrar su número a la multitud habitual de los sábados por la mañana en Casemates.
Justo antes de que comenzara el ciclo, los ciclistas se prepararon en la línea de salida y se les unió Chris Nuñez, Director de la Asociación Ciclista de Gibraltar, que se dirigió a la multitud, agradeciendo a todos su apoyo.
El Ministro de Transporte, Vijay Daranyani, también mostró su apoyo uniéndose a los ciclistas en Casemates para marcar el inicio de la ruta ciclista.
A las 11:30, todo el mundo se puso en marcha. Ciclistas ávidos y aficionados, parejas, amigos, familias enteras, niños pequeños y adolescentes se dirigieron a la corta colina junto al ICC y giraron a la izquierda por Line Wall Road.
Más de 200 ciclistas tomaron temporalmente las carreteras de Gibraltar, ondeando banderas ciclistas más seguras mientras se abrían paso a lo largo de la ruta previamente planificada. La colorida y emocionada procesión saludó a los transeúntes mientras se dirigía hacia el sur, hacia el cementerio de Trafalgar, bajando hacia Ragged Staff y hacia el sur por Queensway. Tras una breve parada en el pequeño puerto de barcos, donde un dron proporcionado por Drone Air tomó unas increíbles imágenes aéreas de la multitud, la multitud de ciclistas continuó por Europort Road hacia la avenida Winston Churchill.
