Part of the mission of a botanic garden is to educate visitors on plants using their displays , including species that are not commonly seen in cultivation . However , there are species that are used very regularly in cultivation , but which are so successful at garden plants that they are used at botanic gardens too , to create visually attractive displays . The African Lily is one such plant . It is ubiquitous as a garden plant in the Mediterranean region , where it flowers during June and early July . It is also widely planted elsewhere in the world , particularly places with a Mediterranean climate . As with so many plants that are used in horticulture throughout the Mediterranean , the species is native to South Africa and is therefore well-suited to our climate . It has beautiful blue umbels with flowers that adorn planted areas in partial or especially full sun , including around the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens where it grows alongside other South African bulbs . The bulbs of this plant can last up to 75 years . It belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae , which includes a wide range of bulbous plants including the genera Amaryllis and Narcissus , the latter including the Daffodils .
