in the opposite direction to ours . It was there that we found the upper mouth of the Cueva del Gran Duque ; months later we would locate the lower mouth of the cave . It seemed as if he wanted to take us there .
The Eagle Owl is also called the Great Duke , for its fantastic size and for being the largest nocturnal bird of prey in the Iberian Peninsula , it was this fantastic bird that gave its name to the cave . Why is the Gran Duque Cave special ?
First , because on the day of its discovery an archaeological site was found intact , later dated to the Final Neolithic period , 4000 BC . The archaeological material recovered on the surface and the subsequent study highlighted the importance of this cave as one of the most important settlements in the south of the province of Malaga , and of the human communities that inhabited the Sierra de la Utrera more than 6,000 years ago .
And secondly for its diversity of cave fauna , as it has several species of troglobitic fauna pending cataloging and study ; we are currently coordinating , with the Department of Chiroptera of the Biological Station of Doñana of the CSIC , the protection , control and study of the important colony of bats in the Cueva del Gran Duque . Was La Linea de la Concepcion known to be spearheading speleology in the area ?
La Línea is one of the pioneering localities in speleological activities at national and Andalusian level . At the beginning of the 70 ' s , in the 20 th century , activities were already being carried out in the caves of the Utrera Karst .
At that time , under the leadership of the late Carlos J . Mateo , explorations were already being carried out in the caves of the Utrera Karst ( Casares ); at the end of the 70 ' s they were already collaborating with the GIEX Group of Jerez in the explorations and investigations in the Subterranean Complex of Cerro de las Motillas ( Cortes de la Frontera ) and in the chasms of La Manga de Villaluenga del Rosario .
It was 1982 when the Sierra de la Utrera Research and Exploration Project was launched , in which a large multidisciplinary team , composed of speleologists , biologists , archaeologists and geologists , is currently participating .

A media tarde apareció sobre el grupo un impresionante Búho Real ( Bubo bubo ), su vuelo rasante nos llevo a perseguirlo por el roquedo , hasta que desapareció tras una gran roca desde la que emprendió vuelo en dirección contraria a la nuestra . Allí fue donde nos encontramos con la boca superior de la Cueva del Gran Duque ; meses más tarde localizaríamos la boca inferior de la cueva . Parecía como si hubiese querido llevarnos hasta allí .
Al Búho Real también se le llama Gran Duque , por su fantástico porte y por ser el ave rapaz nocturna más grande de la Península Ibérica , fue esta fantástica ave la que dio nombre a la cueva . ¿ Porque es especial la Cueva del Gran Duque ?
Primero porque el día del descubrimiento se localizo intacto un yacimiento arqueológico , datado posteriormente en el Neolítico Final , 4000 a . C . El material arqueológico recuperado en superficie y el estudio posterior puso en valor la importancia de esta cavidad como uno de los asentamientos más importantes en el sur de la provincia de Málaga , y de las comunidades humanas que habitaron en la Sierra de la Utrera hace más de 6.000 años .
Y segundo por su diversidad faunística cavernícola , ya que cuenta con diversas especies de fauna troglobia pendientes de catalogación y estudio ; actualmente estamos coordinando , con el Departamento de Quirópteros de la Estación Biológica de Doñana del CSIC , la protección , control y estudio de la importante colonia de murciélagos existentes en la Cueva del Gran Duque . ¿ Fue La Línea de la Concepción pionera en la espeleología en la zona ?
La Línea es una de las localidades pioneras en las actividades espeleológicas a nivel nacional y andaluz . A principios de la década de los 70 , del siglo XX , ya se estaban realizando actividades en las cavidades del Karst de la Utrera .
En aquella época , bajo la batuta del desaparecido Carlos J . Mateo , ya se estaban realizando exploraciones en las cavidades del Karst de la Utrera ( Casares ); a finales de los 70 ya se estaba colaborando con el Grupo GIEX de Jerez en las exploraciones e investigaciones en el Complejo Subterráneo del Cerro de las Motillas ( Cortes de la Frontera ) y en las simas de la Manga de Villaluenga del Rosario .
