and slashing carbon emissions . Idealistically turning them all off would simply solve the problem but “ obviously , we aren ’ t going to turn off all lights at night ” Seymoure said . “ However , we can and must have better lighting practices .”
Thankfully these mostly involve minor tweaks to the lighting we already use . LEDs are easily dimmable which can be implemented in early hours , without it light spreads far creating these global elevated levels harming insects . We can utilise motion sensor lights that aren ’ t essential and in constant use , as well as shading lights by shining them away from vulnerable habitats .
There is also the method of coloured filters , but this is shone in uncertain and indecisive evidence . Although amber-filtered LEDs are recommended as the least disruptive to insects from multiple studies , this wavelength has the greatest negative impact on fireflies as its similar to the bioluminescent colour produced by the species . “ The general rule is that blue and white light are the most attractive to insects ,” Seymoure said but he also understands that the situation is not so black and white . “ However , there are hundreds of species that are attracted to yellows , oranges and reds .” Therefore , a glaringly obvious conclusion is hard to reach , it may not be simple to agree on filters that cause the least harm to the majority of insects but also allow safe illumination for people .
But how will these solutions become reality ? Government legislation and action to reduce excessive night light is needed and guilty light polluting countries are starting to highlight the problem . In 2019 the French government passed a law taking small effective steps to control the problem including restricting blue light emissions , lighting curfews and turning off lights in non-essential areas such as waterways . With government support , this niche overlooked problem will become further validated in the public ’ s eye .
If there is one major positive of tackling light pollution says Seymoure , it ’ s that “ you don ’ t have to go and clean up light like you do with most pollutants ”, simply “ once you turn off a light , it is gone .”
