Some very important victories emerged from the COP26 climate summit , including commitments to end deforestation globally within 9 years . Nevertheless : as the dust settles and we reflect on the outcomes of this historic conference , a sense of failure lingers in the air . Studies show that the rate of emissions reductions committed by nations will not be enough to meet the 1.5 ° C target needed to avoid the worst effects of climate change . It is highly likely , therefore , that the impacts of climate change will continue to be felt over the coming years and decades . The question remains : how will these affect Gibraltar , its people , and its economy ? This article summarises , in an accessible manner , a few of the key climate risks Gibraltar can expect to face . The findings are based on research I conducted as part of three dissertations for Durham University , Harvard University and Edinburgh University . In order to understand the social and economic risks posed to our community by a warming planet , it is essential to first detail how the climate is projected to change in Gibraltar - so that we can then analyse the impacts those changes will likely have .
