HOTTEST OCEAN TEMPERATURES IN HISTORY RECORDED IN 2021
Last year saw ocean temperatures rise to a record high for the sixth consecutive year in a row .
The research published in Advances for Atmospheric Sciences attributes the recording breaking temperatures to the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from human activities , which has trapped heat within the climate system and increased ocean temperatures .
Despite the current La Niña event , a climatic phenomenon that ordinarily causes surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean to cool to below-average temperatures , ocean surface temperatures continue to rise relentlessly year on year .
Over the last 50 years , 90 % of heat generated was absorbed by the oceans . This staggering amount has helped temporarily delay global land heating , which would have already reached catastrophic levels for land-based species , including humans .
Oceans also take up about a third of the carbon dioxide emitted by human activity , causing them to acidify . This acidification is causing coral reefs to degrade , placing a quarter of the world ’ s marine life at risk , as well as the food and livelihoods of more than 500 million people .
As the oceans continue to warm , storms , hurricanes and extreme rainfall will also lead to an increase in severe flooding events across the globe . The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are also under severe threat from ocean heating , which will lead to rising sea levels , making large parts of the world unliveable .
According to the research , the long-term ocean warming is larger in the Atlantic and Southern Oceans than in other regions and mainly attributed , via climate model simulations , to an increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations . Record high temperatures were also recorded in four out of seven maritime domains , including the Mediterranean Sea .
Michael Mann , a climate scientist who worked on the paper , commented on the findings , “ Until we reach net-zero emissions , that heating will continue , and we ’ ll continue to break ocean heat content records , as we did this year . Better awareness and understanding of the oceans are a basis for the actions to combat climate change ”.
