The daring travelers of the nineteenth century are no longer with us , those who went in search of new experiences and horizons to fill their hungry eyes . Those with a specific goal and motivation , such as discovering the Nile ’ s sources , traveling the Silk Road , or evangelizing impoverished lost souls . Women and men said that the only information they had about their chosen location came from the testimonies of a few who had gone before them and , thankfully , returned .
Barely a century later , at the height of industrial development , work and mobility were also democratized and , with the invention of the summer holiday , the possibility arose of changing scenery at least once a year . Alas , those summers when the Spanish middle classes could afford to rent an apartment for two months in any small village on the coasts of the Levant or Andalusia ! Nothing much more ostentatious than that , but the vacations were made complete , we children from abroad played with the locals with whom , during the winter , we exchanged letters to keep in touch with them until next year ’ s reunion .
Shortly after , tourism was invented and with it we moved on to low cost fashion , fast food and everything that means not letting things run at their own pace . We entered a world that runs at breakneck speed where knowing places and people no longer matters , the important thing is to take a photo , as exotic as possible , and upload it without delay to social networks . We travel wanting to find in another part of the world , with climatic conditions , development and availability of resources very different from ours , what we like to have at home . Cold water to drink in tropical places where cold is obtained from gasoline-powered generators , swimming pools and golf courses in the desert , gin and tonics in countries where alcohol consumption is prohibited . If that is what we are looking for and we have it at home … why move so far and so expensive ? Luckily airlines started to restrict luggage years ago , otherwise we would be able to take even the sofa … which after all is the most comfortable because it already has the shape made .
The same happens the other way around , ancestral communities turned into tourist circuses , into human zoos , where their members are encouraged to sit and wait for the dollar-bringers to arrive . Ethnic groups forced to adjust to the globalized world at the cost of losing their identity . How much damage was
