This must have been centuries ago because today we have already accustomed them to the fact that without money there is no worthwhile exchange. Now they are the ones who, tired of the endless parade of cameras shooting left and right, are not interested in who you are or where you come from; better if you don’ t ask too many questions or give too much to do. The only important thing is that you leave your tip before leaving through the door, without closing it, thank you; because there is another tourist arriving behind you. And behind the resort there is the smell of the imposition of an out-of-place system that relegates the local population to mere servants with the obligation to feel lucky because, at least, they have a job. It also smacks of a whiny environment that puts up with the excesses of the pretty face.
The discontent goes both ways, some are already tired of returning home with the decaffeinated feeling of an organized trip in which they have been exhaustively planned up to the last minute. Where to go, what to see, what to eat and at what time. Deceived by the showcase world offered by tour operators. Confused by having tiptoed through places without having been able to stop to see, smell or feel, let alone share with the locals beyond a negotiation for the sale of a souvenir. Meanwhile, on the other side, there are those who are soaked with tourists who feel their territory has been invaded and usurped in what could well be called a new era of first-world colonialism.
Fortunately, another way of traveling is emerging, more and more people are sensing that behind the resort there is also a world truly rich in culture and depth. There are people with life stories, there are customs very different from ours, there are problems and solutions to those problems that could serve as a lesson.
The context for fair tourism involves getting to know the cultures and environment of other countries in a way that is socially equitable, culturally balanced, ecologically healthy and economically beneficial to the local population. Esto debió de ser hace siglos porque hoy en día ya los hemos acostumbrado a que sin dinero de por medio no hay intercambio que valga. Ahora son ellos a los que, cansados del desfile inagotable de cámaras de fotos disparando a diestro y siniestro, no les interesa quién eres ni de dónde vienes; mejor si no preguntas mucho ni das mucho que hacer. Lo único importante es que dejes tu propina antes de salir por la puerta, sin cerrarla, gracias; porque hay otro turista llegando detrás tuya. Y es que por detrás del resort huele a la imposición de un sistema fuera de sitio que relega a la población local a meros sirvientes con la obligación de sentirse afortunados porque, al menos, tienen trabajo. También se escucha a un medioambiente quejicoso que soporta los excesos de la cara bonita.
El descontento es en ambos sentidos, los hay ya cansados de volver a casa con la sensación descafeinada de un viaje organizado en el que les han planificado exhaustivamente hasta el último minuto. Dónde ir, qué ver, qué comer y a qué hora. Engañados con el mundo escaparate que les ofrecen los operadores turísticos. Confundidos por haber pasado de puntillas por lugares sin haber podido pararse a ver, oler ni sentir y, mucho menos, a compartir con los lugareños más allá de una negociación por la venta de un souvenir. Mientras que del otro lado, los hay empalagados de turistas que sienten invadido y usurpado su territorio en lo que bien podría llamarse una nueva era de colonialismo primermundista.
Por fortuna, otra forma de viajar está emergiendo, cada vez hay más gente que intuye que por detrás del resort también hay un mundo verdaderamente rico en cultura y profundidad. Existen personas con historias de vida, existen costumbres muy diferentes a las nuestras, existen problemas y soluciones a esos problemas que bien podrían valernos de lección.
