How soon do you think an electric bus service will be available and what would be their likely routes?
The trial was an absolute success, the buses we brought in did what we wanted them to do and we are now finishing off the tender process. We have an issue of lead time, at one moment we are being told it will be six month and the next we are being told it will be nine months, but it should be some time after next summer. We will start with the flat routes and then see how this develops. The technology is ever changing so hopefully in the future new buses will be able to climb our hills and we can then introduce further routes. We have also looked at a small bus which successfully climbed the hills in the Upper Town area, we are delighted with that so even the Upper Town will have electric buses which I am really excited about. The Upper Town area has been waiting for a long time for a proper bus service and they are going to get a top of the range service now. How about pop-up Lanes?
Pop-up lanes require space, which would mean closing roads. Recently I read an article in a UK newspaper about pop-up lanes in London where there were complaints of too much traffic because of the road closures to allow for the lane. They then carried out an exercise and realised that there were only two cyclists per hour using it which concluded that the pop-up lane wasn’ t worth it. If I were to put up a pop-up lane along Line Wall Road, I would have to close the road which I have already done, and people didn’ t want it. Is Pedal Ready still in the pipeline?
It is an initiative that we are very keen on doing. We have everything ready to roll it out in schools but because of Covid it has been put on hold. But I’ d like to think that in the next academic year we will be able to do it. We want to start with the schools at first, but I would like to open it up to the public as well. There has been talk of a pollution tax for commercial and private vehicles, is this likely to be introduced.
We haven’ t tou ched up on it since we first discussed it earlier this year so at this moment in time there is no plan to introduce a pollution tax. With a frequent bus service, and the extra buses I have intham no tiene un gran impacto sobre el tráfico, así es que lo hemos dejado como estaba aunque comunicaremos algo a corto plazo en relación a la segunda. ¿ Tuvo éxito la prueba reciente con el autobús eléctrico? ¿ Cuándo contempla que se pueda poner en práctica un servicio de este tipo y cuáles serían las rutas probables?
La prueba constituyó un éxito total. Los autobuses rindieron exactamente como esperábamos y ahora estamos culminando el concurso. Hay complicaciones con los plazos porque si primero nos comunican que se tardarán seis meses, luego nos sicen que serán nueve, pero se materializará en algún momento después del próximo verano. Empezaremos con las rutas planas y veremos cómo se van desarrollando. La tecnología avanza y esperamos que en el futuro estos vehículos puedan transitar nuestras cuestas para así introducir nuevas rutas. También hemos contemplado la incorporación de un mini bus que ascendió las colinas de la parte alta y estamos encantados con ello porque hasta esta zona dispondrá de autobuses eléctricos. Esta parte aguarda desde hace tiempo un servicio en condiciones y acabará disfrutando de uno de alta calidad. ¿ Y los carriles emergentes?
Estos carriles requieren de espacio, lo cual conllevaría el corte de carreteras. Leí recientemente un artículo en un periódico británico sobre este tipo de carriles en Londres y las quejas que se sucedieron por esta causa. Llevaron a cabo una prueba y se comprobó que sólo dos ciclistas usaban los carriles cada hora, de lo cual se concluyó que no era una propuesta eficaz. De abrir un carril emergente en Line Wall Road, tendría que cortar la carretera que acabamos de abrir. ¿ Sigue en pie el proyecto Pedal Ready?
Se trata de una iniciativa con la que estamos entusiasmados. Está todo preparado para ponerlo en marcha en los centros escolares pero el Covid lo ha aplazado. Pero me gustaría pensar que en el próximo curso académico podremos hacerlo. Queremos empezar por los colegios, pero también abrirlo al público en general. Ha habido especulaciones en torno a la introducción de un impuesto de contaminación tanto para los vehículos particulares como para los privados …
No lo hemos discutido desde principios de este año, por lo que en este momento no hay ningún plan para implantar dicho impuesto. Con un servicio de
