It is a real shame because other much larger cities around the world such as Barcelona , Paris and Copenhagen have made or are making big changes to their city centres to move away from cars .
Gibraltar is a very small place ; we can ’ t compare it to the likes of Copenhagen and that has always been my argument . I am in favour of bicycle lanes , but we have to introduce them in a different way to what has been done in Barcelona , Paris and Copenhagen , a slower way . To allow us and our traffic flows to adjust . People do complain about changes but when I closed the road some took it further with online abusive comments and threats . I have taken all these projects on and I have no problem with that . I will continue fighting for them , but I don ’ t think it is fair that people say such violent things towards me just because I closed a road . Every decision I have made over the last year has been with good intentions for the future of our community We would all love to see the wonderful beautification plans for Line Wall Rd coming to fruition . What plans do you have to ensure this happens ?
To be quite honest , it is not something that the cabinet has discussed as the cabinet is very busy at the moment with matters related to Brexit , but fingers crossed , Covid will come to end soon so that we can continue with plans like this one . However , the way I see it , the Line Wall project was not just a green project , but it was about the environment as a whole .. As things currently stand after the temporary closure , we will be unable to reduce traffic in that area , so we now need to make a decision as to whether we continue solely with a beautification project or whether we wait a little longer and see if people are willing to change their minds .
Editor ’ s note - Since we had the chat with the Minister in his New Year ’ s address the Chief Minister announced that the Line Wall Road project will not proceed . How about the closures of Chatham Counter Guard and Europort Road ?
Europort Road is still at a very early stage , Chatham really doesn ’ t affect traffic that much so we have left it as it is , but we will be making an announcement in the near future as to what we would like to do with Chatham . Es una auténtica pena porque otras ciudades mucho mayores como Barcelona , Parías y Copenhague han emprendido o están realizando cambios considerables de cara a liberar los centros urbanos de tráfico rodado .

Estoy a favor de los carrilles bici , pero tenemos que implantarlos de forma diferente a como se ha hecho en Barcelona , París y Copenhague , de manera más lenta . Necesitamos tiempo para ajustar nuestro flujo de tráfico . Los ciudadanos se quehan de los cambios , pero cuando cortamos la carretera algunas personas reaccionaron de forma abusiva a través de comentarios y amenazas . He corrido con todos estos proyectos y ello no me supone un problema . Seguiré peleando por dichos planes , pero considero injusto que se viertan comentarios tan violentos hacia mi persona sólo porque corté una carretera . Cada decisión adoptada por mí durante el último año ha sido bienintencionada y pensando en nuestra comunidad . A todo nos encantaría ver materializados los proyectos de embellecimiento de Line Wall Road coming to fruition . ¿ Cómo contempla que se puedan llevar a cabo ?
Para ser sincero , no es algo que nuestro equipo haya deliberado a raíz de lo ocupados que estamos con el Brexit , pero mantenemos la esperanza de que el Covid acabare pronto y podamos proseguir con planes como el que menciona . No obstante , yo considero que el proyecto Line Wall no se trataba sólo de un proyecto ecológico sino también sobre el medio ambiente en su conjunto . Según ha quedado todo , no podremos reducir el tráfico in esa zona así que debemos tomar una decisión en cuanto a si proseguimos exclusivamente con el proyecto de embellecimiento o si esperamos un poco más a ver si los ciudadanos cambian de opinión .
