The closure of Line Wall Road will have enabled you to gather essential data . Can you share some of your findings ?
We gathered data ( throughout the consultation period ) which led us to introduce a one-way traffic system going northbound . The initial idea was always to have a one-way lane and the data gathered demonstrated that the main traffic was travelling in a northbound direction and so we closed the road to southbound traffic . The reopening was primarily due to two reasons ; I have always said that I like to listen to what people have to say and it seems that people wanting to drive their cars is very important to them . When we launched the Line Wall Road project the idea was to change the way people do things , we wanted people to use public transport , which is why we increased the bus service . We also wanted to encourage people to walk or cycle , unfortunately it seems , our community is reluctant to change and I can understand that , not everybody wants change . I too am frightened of change , but we need to adapt on how we do things , at this moment in time it is unfortunate that people are not ready . We are a listening government , and I am a listening minister , therefore it was decided that the best thing to do is to allow things to go back to normal and reopen the road in both directions . My plan is to continue consulting people and to see if there is an appetite for something similar again in the future , if there isn ’ t then at the end of the day , it is what the people want . Following the experience gained by the closure , will a campaign promoting the merits of reducing traffic be launched . In hindsight , do you believe there could have been a better public campaign explaining the tremendous benefits of reducing our traffic congestion .
In hindsight perhaps we could have done a campaign beforehand . We closed the road down in the middle of the Covid crisis thinking that it was the right time as there was very little traffic on our roads , and that people were used to walking more . It is something that I want to continue pursuing as I think it is important for our future and that people should be made aware that we can do things differently . I think the younger generation are more open , I have been stopped in the street

Recogimos información durante el proceso de consultas que nos decidió a introducir el sistema de tráfico de una sola dirección , la norte . Desde el principio pensamos en reducir la vía a un sólo carril y la información recopilada demostró que la mayor parte del tráfico se dirigía hacia el norte , así que decidimos cortar el tráfico en dirección sur . La reapertura se debió principalmente a dos motivos . Siempre he mantenido que me gusta escuchar la opinión de la ciudadanía y parece ser que moverse en coche es algo muy importante para la misma . Cuando lanzamos el proyecto de Line Wall Road la idea consistía en cambiar los hábitos de la gente , queríamos que hicieran uso del transporte público y de ahí que aumentaramos el servicio de autobuses . También pretendíanos animar a los ciudadanos a caminar o usar la bicicleta pero , lamentablemente , parece que nuestra comunidad es refractaria al cambio y eso es algo que puedo entender , que no todo el mundo quiere cambiar . A mí también me asustan los cambios pero es necesario adaptar la forma en la que hacemos las cosas aunque en estos momentos hay gente que no está preparada . Somos un gobierno receptivo y soy un ministro receptivo , de modo que se ha decidido que ahora lo mejor es dejar que la situación regrese a la normalidad y se reabra la carretera para ambos sentidos de la circulación . Mi plan consiste en seguir consultando y comprobar si crece la predisposición de emprender un cambio parecido en el futuro . Si no lo hay , al final es la gente quien decide . A raíz de la experiencia adquirida con el cierre , ¿ se llevará a cabo una campaña que recalque los beneficios de reducir el tráfico ? ¿ Cree que se prodía hacer una mejor campaña pública resaltando esas tremendas ventajas ?
Analizando lo sucedido , es posible que se pudiera haber lanzado una campaña de antemano . Cerramos la campaña en mitad de la crisis del Covid considerando que era ése el momento propicio dado que el volumen de tráfico era pequeño y la ciudadanía estaba optando por caminar más . Se trata de un objetivo que mantengo en mente por creer que es importante para nuestro futuro y que los ciudadanos tienen que concienciarse de que se pueden hacer las cosas de
