When killer whales chased tuna , many of them would make their way to shore and end up stranded on beaches . Ancient settlers would carefully follow these events in order to capture stranded tunas . Proof of can be seen at the Cave of the Orcas , in Zahara de los Atunes , where a cave painting depicts the sign of Aries ( the ram of the sea ), as well as the white mark or saddle patch that orcas have behind their dorsal part . Place names within the Natural Park of the Strait such as Punta Carnero in Algeciras could have originated from the high points used to sight killer whales in search of tunas .
After spawning , this incredible migration has a return journey from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic , where hungry tunas then fall prey to fishing hooks . Killer whales have also learned to follow small boats between the months of July and October , waiting for some tuna to fall from hooks , swimming fast to try and steal an easy bite to eat .

So much so , that this territory , known as the Natural Park of the Strait is home to three protected natural spaces : The Natural Park of the Strait itself , declared by Decree 57 / 2003 of March 4 ; the Playa de los Lances Natural Area , declared by Law 2 / 1989 , of July 18 ; and the Natural Monument of the Dunes of Bolonia , declared by Decree 226 / 2001 , of October 2 . Pero para saber cuándo era la época y el momento en que estos gigantes del mar pasaban por el Estrecho , aprendieron a guiarse por las aletas negras de las orcas . Cuando las orcas perseguían a los atunes , muchos de estos se dirigían a la orilla y quedaban varados en las playas . Estos antiguos pobladores seguían con esmero estos acontecimientos para poder capturar a estos atunes varados . Prueba de ello ha quedado materializado en la cueva de las orcas , en Zahara de los Atunes , donde una pintura rupestre representa el signo de aries , el carnero del mar , como la mancha blanca o silla de montar que tienen las orcas en su parte dorsal . Topónimos en el Parque Natural del Estrecho como Punta Carnero en Algeciras podrían tener su origen en el promontorio desde dónde se avistaban las orcas en busca de los atunes .
Esta increíble migración tiene el viaje de vuelta desde el Mediterráneo tras el desove al Atlántico , encontrándose los atunes hambrientos y , es entonces , cuando pican el anzuelo del hombre . También las orcas han aprendido a seguir a pequeñas embarcaciones entre los meses de julio y octubre , esperando a que algún ejemplar de atún caiga en un anzuelo , nadando rápidas para intentar robar un bocado fácil .
