Seasonal environments differ in their impact on plants , and plants respond to such environments in different ways . Some Mediterranean plants survive the harsh drought period that affects the region during the warmer months by dropping their leaves in order to conserve water and energy . In such cases , they are said to be ‘ summer deciduous ’; very much the opposite of the deciduous trees and plants of temperate environments that shed their leaves during the winter , when sunlight and warmth are scarce . The Shrubby Scorpion Vetch looks dead during the summer when it is leafless , but it comes back to life after the first rains , producing leaves first and then a profusion of tight bunches of intense yellow , beautifully scented flowers during what we call the late winter , but is really the early arrival of spring on The Rock . This medium-sized shrub is a member of the pea family ( Fabaceae ) and is native to the western Mediterranean , where it has a localised distribution . It is common in Gibraltar , including the Botanic Gardens . Flowers of the pea family are specially adapted for pollination by different species of bees , but in Gibraltar , the most significant association of this species with an insect is as a foodplant for the caterpillar of the stunning burnet moth Zygaena fausta ssp . gibraltarica
El impacto de las estaciones en el entorno es diferente según la planta , y las plantas se relacionan con el entorno de diversas maneras . Hay especies mediterráneas que resisten la época seca , durante los meses más calurosos , perdiendo sus hojas para conservar así agua y energía . En estos casos reciben la denominación de ' caducifolias de verano ', siendo el extremo contrario al de los árboles y plantas caducos que pierden las hojas en invierno , cuando escasean la luz solar y las temperaturas son bajas .
La veza escorpión arbustiva aparenta no tener vida durante el verano debido a que no tiene hojas , pero revive con las primeras lluvias , produciendo una profusión de hojas y ramos de flores amarillas , de maravilloso aroma , durante lo que llamamos parte final del invierno pero que en realidad constituye la llegada de la primavera al Peñón .
Este arbusto de tamaño medio pertenece a la familia de los chícharos ( Fabaceae ) y es endógena y se puede encontrar por todo el mediterráneo occidental . Es una especie típica y común de Gibraltar , estando presente , cómo no , en los Jardines Botánicos . Las flores de la familia de los chícharos se adaptan particularmente bien a la polinización por parte de las abejas , pero en Gibraltar su asocación más habitual se produce como alimento de la oruga de la maravillosa polilla denominada Zygaena fausta ssp . gibraltarica .
