A note from the editor Vanessa Byrne / Managing Director
As we embrace the festive season , it ’ s a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the opportunities ahead . At OTWO , this December issue embodies our commitment to community , sustainability , and hope for a greener planet .
The holidays are a perfect time to adopt sustainable practices , whether through thoughtful gifts supporting local artisans or decorating with natural and recycled materials . Every small choice can contribute to a cleaner , eco-conscious world .
In this month ' s News Shorts ( starting on page 10 ), we celebrate the Energy Vision Group ’ s win of the national Energy Globe Award Gibraltar 2024 for their innovative solar projects , reducing CO2 emissions across Gibraltar . This win secures their place at the global awards in March 2025 . We also highlight Gibraltar ’ s commitment to sustainable tourism at the Travel Weekly Sustainability Summit in London , where Minister Christian Santos discussed the region ’ s forward-thinking environmental projects .
We report on the alarming rise in natural disasters in 2024 , with hurricanes , wildfires , and floods devastating communities . The World Meteorological Organization attributes these events to climate change , highlighting the urgent need for global adaptation . Additionally , cities like New York , Paris , and Tokyo are leading the way with green roofs to combat urban heat and enhance biodiversity , while concerns about spaceflight ’ s environmental impact grow .
On Page 38 Andrés Ferrer Santiago ' s article , Sustainability Challenges : How to Address Them in 2025 , discusses the shift towards a sustainable economy driven by the European Green Deal . It introduces key directives like the Green Taxonomy Regulation and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism , which will help reduce emissions and promote sustainability .
Ferrer highlights several challenges for businesses by 2025 , including regulatory compliance , emissions reduction , circular economy adoption , and biodiversity protection . He emphasizes the importance of transparency , innovation , and risk management , urging companies to integrate sustainability into their strategies for long-term value creation .

Anthony Pitaluga ’ s exploration of Berlin on page 50 takes us through the city ’ s historical and cultural depth , as he reflects on his visit to the German capital in 2020 to research World War II history . His personal journey through Berlin sets the stage for a deeper look at the city ’ s war-torn past .
On page 64 , Juanlu Gonzalez ’ s article , The Sufi Treasure of Arcos de la Frontera , uncovers the mystery behind the “ magic circle ” in Arcos . This ancient marble mosaic , dating back over 1,000 years , reflects the town ’ s rich Islamic history and enduring cultural syncretism .
Looking ahead , OTWO is stepping up for 2025 with the return of our printed edition and a goal of distributing 5,000 copies across Gibraltar and Spain . We ’ re also excited to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the EcoFestival , with plans to make it bigger and better than ever .
This holiday season , let ’ s remember the power of giving — not just to our loved ones , but to the earth . Whether through reducing waste or supporting sustainable brands , we all have the power to make a difference . Happy Holidays from the OTWO family to yours , Peace and Love always ,
