AT LAST SOME LIGHT FOR THE WATER
On 27 November 2023 , the Junta de Andalucía and the Spanish government reached an agreement to protect the Doñana National Park . The agreement , which puts an end to two years of negotiations , provides for the closure of illegal irrigation in the area and the investment of 1.4 billion euros in the sustainable development of the region .
The agreement establishes that farmers who abandon their crops in the Corona Norte de Doñana , where most of the illegal irrigation is concentrated , will receive aid of up to 100,000 euros per hectare . This aid will be earmarked for the renaturalisation or reforestation of the land . It also envisages the implementation of an investment plan for the sustainable development of the region . This plan , which will be financed with the 1.4 billion euros committed by both administrations , will focus on the promotion of rain-fed crops , the improvement of infrastructures and the promotion of sustainable tourism . It has also been welcomed by environmental organisations , which have been calling for years for measures to
protect Doñana . However , it has also been criticised by some farmers , who consider that the aid is not sufficient .
However , it is an important step towards the protection of Doñana , but its success will depend on its effective implementation . It will be necessary to ensure that the aid reaches the farmers who need it and that the investment plan is properly implemented .
