Is the Environment any better ? ¿ Está mejor el medio ambiente ?

As I start writing , COP27 has begun , and COP15 will take place when this edition is released . Within just a few weeks , two of the most critical summits on climate and nature will decide the fate of the environment and our planet .
Egypt will host the 27 th United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties ( COP27 ), and a lot is riding on the agreements made over the two-week event .
Some hailed the last Conference of the Parties ( COP26 ) in 2021 a success due to a landmark global pledge to end and reverse deforestation by 2030 and renewed commitments to keep warming below 1.5C . Scientists and environmentalists , however , found that pledges made at COP26 will not limit warming .
The 15 th UN Biodiversity Conference ( COP15 ) was supposed to take place in 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic . Unfortunately , previous biodiversity commitments have fallen woefully short , with the vast majority of targets completely missed . With time running out to avoid catastrophic biodiversity loss , a new Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework agreement is due to be adopted at COP15 with a vision to live in harmony with nature by 2050 .
So with the imminent need to cut emissions , transition to renewables , halt deforestation and protect biodiversity , are global commitments enough to halt climate breakdown and is the environment getting any better ?
Emissions and Climate pledges
The pandemic and global lockdowns saw greenhouse gas emissions plunge by 4.6 % in 2020 . Unfortunately , since the end of the pandemic , they have rebounded , with atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases now reaching an all-time high .
The World Meteorological Organisation found that atmospheric methane concentrations rose by 6.4 % last year to an all-time high and had their biggest
