Homelessness in the 21 st Century : The world-wide socio-economic challenge
Following from the November article , which discussed the homelessness challenge faced locally and globally in the context of our build environment with focus upon the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ), we continue exploring the concept of a residence designed to aid those in need of shelter and provide support to assist its residents in regaining control over their livelihood .
Our concept seeks to achieve much more than offering a temporary accommodation for individuals in need , as we have approached the subject matter by taking a holistic view in order to gain an understanding of what does it mean in reality to be experiencing homelessness , what are the root causes of homelessness and how can we assist those affected in regaining their independence by offering the support they need to recover ( whether physically , mentally , or financially ), return to work , secure permanent accommodation and live independently .
Homelessness , as we have learnt in the previous article , takes many forms and can affect absolutely anyone . If you live in a home where extreme overcrowding is an issue , a house that lacks basic amenities , a building that is unfit for human habitation , or you are forced to stay in a house under threat of violence , unable to leave , you are affected by homelessness , as being homeless does not equal to living on the streets .
Various physical , psychological , financial and other barriers prevent individuals affected by homelessness from being able or having the strength , means and / or opportunities to change their circumstances , hence a suitable accommodation alone does not constitute a sufficient solution unless the physical space is appropriately designed , functional and equipped with the services and support structure required to aid its future residence in addressing the root cause ( s ) of their homelessness with ongoing support available . Como continuación del artículo de noviembre que analizaba el reto del desamparo a niveles local y global en el contexto de nuestro entorno y enfocado a los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible , seguimos explorando el concepto de residencia diseñada para dar asistencia a aquellos necesitados de cobijo así como ayudar a sus inquilinos en la recuperación del control sobre su vida .
Nuestro concepto pretende llegar más allá del ofrecimiento de alojamiento temporal a personas necesitadas , dado que hemos abordado esta cuestión a través de una perspectiva holística de cara a comprender qué significa en realidad la experiencia del desamparo , cuáles son las razones del mismo y cómo podemos ayudar a quienes han de recuperar su independencia mediante el apoyo que les falta para recuperarse ( ya sea física , mental o financieramente ), volver al trabajo , asegurar un alojamiento permanente y vivir de forma independiente .
El desamparo , como decubrimos en el artículo anterior , tiene muchas formas diferentes y puede afectar a cualquiera . Si se vive en un hogar excesivamente habitado , o que carezca de las instalaciones fundamentales , un edificio no adecuado para la ocupación humana o se está forzado a permanecer en una casa donde existe la amenaza de violencia y no se puede dejar , se vive afectado por el desamparo dado que dicha condición no se limita a la de vivir en las calles .
Existen varias barreras de carácter físico , psicológico y financiero que impiden a las personas afectadas por el desamparo poder o tener la fuerza , los medios y o las oportunidades de cambiar sus circunstancias , de modo que un alojamiento apropiado no basta por sí solo como solución a no ser que el espacio físico se diseñe de forma apropiada sea funcional y esté equipada con los servicios y estructura de apoyo necesaria para qaue su futura residencia resulte eficaz en el abordaje de las causas que están en la raíz de su desamparo . La vivienda no debiera ser contemplada como una comodidad sino como un derecho fundamental , garantizado por ley y por los gobiernos nacionales y locales . Y sin embargo , el desamparo en las calles
