Aloes are succulent plants that are distributed throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa and southern Arabia . The best-known member of the genus is Aloe vera because of its use in cosmetics and folk medicine , but there are some 500 species of Aloe . The native distribution of Aloe vera is unknown and it is in fact thought to be of hybrid origin . The most common species of Aloe around Gibraltar , and the one that most of us are familiar with , is the Candelabra Aloe Aloe arborescens .
It is from Southern Africa , from eastern South Africa to Zimbabwe , and produces a profusion of bright red flowers during December . For this reason , flowerings of this species are associated with the Christmas period . Many species of Aloe have very beautiful flowers and these are pollinated by birds . A variety of bird species visit Aloe flowers , but they are best known for their relationship with the very bright and colourful sunbirds , which occur throughout the range of Aloes and fill a similar niche to the hummingbirds of the Americas . Sunbirds are not present in Gibraltar , but some of our local birds have learnt to drink their nectar , particularly wintering Chiffchaffs .
Las aloe son plantas crasas que se desperdigan por gran parte del África subsahariana y el sur de Arabia . La variedad más conocida de la especie es la Aloe vera debido a su uso para la cosmética y la medicina alternativa , pero en realidad existen más de especies diferente de aloe . No se conoce la distribución original de la Aloe vera y se piensa , de hecho , que se trata de una especie híbrida . La especie de aloe más habitual en Gibraltar , y una que la mayoría de nosotros conocemos bien , es la Candelabra Aloe Aloe arborescens .
Procedente del sur de África , desde el sudeste hasta Zimbawe , produce una profusión de brillantes flores rojas durante el mes de diciembre . Es por ello que el florecimiento de esta planta viene asociado al periodo navideño . Varias especies de aloe se distinguen por la belleza de sus flores , que los pajaros polinizan . Las flores de las plantas aloe reciben de hecho la visita de muchas especies de ave diferentes , aunque los inquilinos más habituales son los suimanga , que visitan a todas las variedades conocidas y desempeñan un papel similar al de los ruiseñores en las américas . En Gibraltar no hay suimangas , pero algunas de nuestras aves han aprendido a beber el néctar de las aloes , en particular los mosquiteros .
