structable from a metric; and any filtering requires an explicit condition that allows us to understand which elements have disappeared from the image and why. The representation interprets the system by selecting some properties and relegating others, but its meaning depends precisely on that selection remaining verifiable.
Ciudad Delta is fictional, though the problem it raises applies to any real territory. An urban infrastructure simultaneously encompasses mobility, emissions, accessibility, dependency, time, energy, inequality and many other dimensions that can scarcely be made visible at the same time without destroying the legibility of the representation. Every map or network crops out a part of that complexity and constructs a perspective from which certain relationships take shape whilst others remain waiting for a new question.
The consequence may be less reassuring than it seems. What a visualisation leaves out does not disappear from the territory, and what it manages to make visible does not necessarily constitute its most important feature. The images we use to try to understand a city function as selection devices capable of directing attention, establishing hierarchies and bringing certain relationships to the fore whilst others remain in the background. After working with them sufficiently, these categories may end up becoming part of the very way we think about the system.
Ciudad Delta disappears when the file is closed, but it leaves open a question that no longer belongs to the simulation:
How many cities remain hidden within the city we think we know because we have not yet learnt to formulate the questions capable of making them visible?
Methodological note
Ciudad Delta is a synthetic dataset created specifically for this experiment and comprising 14 nodes and 22 connections. The values for population, mobility, pollution and emissions are fictitious and have no validity as real estimates or emission factors. The network was analysed as an undirected network using Cytoscape, and the three visualisations retain exactly the same topology and spatial arrangement; sistema queda temporalmente fuera de la representación.
