cient to reorganise the interpretation of Ciudad Delta once again.
Standardisation makes it possible to relate the environmental impact of each corridor to the mobility it supports and to compare connections subject to very different traffic volumes. Absolute emissions showed where the greatest total quantity was accumulated; the new measure reveals the intensity of that impact relative to a comparable number of journeys. Some links that previously occupied a secondary position now take on greater prominence, whilst others lose some of the prominence afforded to them by their high level of activity.
The Industrial area now attracts a significant proportion of the attention. Mirador – Industrial achieves the highest intensity in the model, followed by Este – Industrial and Estación Sur – Industrial. This concentration no longer reflects solely the total quantity emitted, but rather the relationship between those emissions and the volume of travel associated with each connection. A less-used corridor may thus appear to be more environmentally detrimental than one with heavier traffic if each comparable unit of travel is associated with a higher emissions load.
The visual proximity between this representation and the previous one is particularly useful for understanding the difference. Nothing changes in the position of the nodes, the colour of the connections or the graphical property used to express the quantity. Only the magnitude assigned to the line thickness changes, so that any shift in the hierarchy can be attributed to the replacement of absolute emissions with standardised emissions. The comparison allows us to distinguish between two questions which, in a table, might appear almost equivalent but which, when visualised, yield different interpretations of the system.
Ciudad Delta thus contains a third geography that remained hidden in the first two. Knowing where the greatest quantity of emissions is concentrated allows us to pinpoint the cumulative impact; relating them to the volume of journeys shows where that mobility is most environmentally intensive. Both interpretations describe the same system and neither replaces the other, because they address different problems and reveal different properties of the same connections. tructura y prolonga deliberadamente la gramática visual de la anterior.
