Some of the busiest corridors in terms of mobility lose prominence, whilst Estación Sur – Industrial takes on a much greater presence. No new information has emerged, nor has the network underpinning the representation been altered. Emissions were part of the dataset from the outset, although they remained hidden in the first visualisation because no graphical property made them visible. What changes between the two images is the variable chosen to organise the focus and, with it, the relative importance that certain connections acquire compared to others.
The difference is particularly significant in environmental analysis, where absolute figures are often influenced by the scale of the activity generating them. A corridor used by thousands of people may accumulate a high volume of emissions even when travel behaviour is relatively efficient; another, with a much lower volume of traffic, may generate fewer emissions in absolute terms whilst at the same time exhibiting a much more unfavourable ratio between pollution and mobility. Looking solely at the total allows us to pinpoint where a particular environmental burden is concentrated, although it does not yet provide information on the intensity with which that burden is generated.
The second Delta City thus reveals a different geography to the first. Where mobility had established a hierarchy based on the volume of journeys, total emissions rearrange the visual weight of the corridors and shift attention towards other areas of the system. The comparison then leads to a question that the absolute value alone cannot answer: what happens when emissions are no longer measured solely by their quantity but are related to the mobility that generates them?
The third city was hidden within the other two
The third representation retains the same structure and deliberately extends the visual grammar of the previous one. The nodes remain in their positions, the connections retain their grey colour, and line thickness continues to act as a quantitative indicator, although it no longer expresses total emissions and instead represents emissions per thousand journeys.
