Since 2004, large combustion plants in the EU have significantly cut their emissions: sulphur dioxide and particulate matter dropped by 94 % and nitrogen oxides by 73 %. This progress is mainly due to European laws that set strict emission limits. Fossil fuel use has also fallen by 41 % as cleaner energy sources replace coal as the main fuel. Stricter future limits and a push for renewables are expected to keep driving emissions down in the coming years.
