ILLEGAL MINING IN PERU
The Awajún and Wampis indigenous communities in the Amazon region of Peru have taken drastic action to confront the illegal mining affecting their territories . These communities have organised themselves into social and environmental defence groups with the aim of protecting the Santiago and Cenepa rivers , which are being severely impacted by illegal mineral extraction .
It is estimated that there are around one hundred dredgers operating illegally in this area , causing significant devastation to the local ecosystem and negatively affecting the lives of the region ' s inhabitants . Illegal mining not only pollutes the rivers , but also destroys biodiversity and endangers the health of indigenous communities due to the release of mercury and other toxic pollutants .
