In Cadiz we can organize a day at the beach or extend it with a boat trip to see cetaceans or seabirds , a diving course , a kite-surfing session , a horseback ride , or a route through the surrounding protected natural areas . And of course , this planning can be rounded off with a meal in any of the nearby restaurants or beach bars .
Considering this scenario , it is logical to think that the municipalities of coastal towns that have beaches are concerned about their maintenance in adequate conditions to meet the needs of that tourism that , ultimately , is generating wealth .
But beaches are natural habitats with complex dynamics . The tide and currents distribute the sands on the shore and this is distributed by the wind to create dunes , which become the reservoir to close the annual cycle and keep everything in place .
Until now , ignorance of these natural cycles has allowed actions that have generated serious problems . Let ' s take for example the installation of breakwaters or the construction of boardwalks .
But on a smaller scale there are other activities that also contribute to damage this balance . We refer to those included in the maintenance and cleaning of beaches . Traditionally , tourist beaches have been conceived as large plains of clean sand , with space only for towels , umbrellas and beach bars . Fortunately , these concepts are changing and there are already initiatives to change the forms of action ; implementing new techniques , tools and machinery , all designed so that the beaches can continue to be a tourist attraction , but at the same time , they can be kept as close as possible to their natural state .
In this regard , we highlight the proposal of Diputación de Cádiz and the Colegio Oficial de Ambientólogos de Andalucía to create a training course for beach managers and workers of the different municipalities of the coast of Cadiz . This proposal provides the people involved , the basic knowledge about the ecology of the beaches and dunes and makes them reflect on what are the most appropriate methods for the maintenance work of each beach . This course , which has been given since 2020 , has had its fourth edition between April 12 and May 4 , 2023 .
In this year ' s edition have participated 38 people from the municipalities of El Puerto de Santa Ma- variada oferta de actividades relacionadas con el mar y su entorno .
En Cádiz podemos organizar un día de playa o ampliar éste con una visita en barco para ver cetáceos o aves marinas , un curso de bautizo de buceo , una sesión de kite-surf , un paseo en caballo , o una ruta por los espacios naturales protegidos colindantes . Y como no , esta planificación se puede redondear con una comida en cualquiera de los restaurantes o chiringuitos cercanos .
Considerando este escenario , es lógico pensar que los ayuntamientos de localidades costeras que tienen playas se preocupen por su mantenimiento en condiciones adecuadas para satisfacer las necesidades de ese turismo que , en definitiva , les está generando riqueza .
Pero las playas son hábitats naturales con una compleja dinámica . La marea y las corrientes disponen las arenas en la orilla y esta es distribuida por el viento para crear dunas , que se convierten en el reservorio para poder cerrar el ciclo anual y mantener todo en su sitio .
Hasta ahora , el desconocimiento de estos ciclos naturales ha permitido actuaciones que han generado problemas serios . Pongamos por ejemplo la instalación de espigones o la construcción de paseos marítimos .
Pero a menor escala hay otras actividades que también contribuyen a dañar ese equilibrio . Nos referimos a las incluidas en el mantenimiento y limpieza de playas . Y es que , tradicionalmente las playas turísticas se han concebido como grandes planicies de arena limpia , con espacio solo para toallas , sombrillas y chiringuitos . Afortunadamente , estos conceptos están cambiando y existen ya iniciativas para cambiar las formas de actuación ; implementando nuevas técnicas , herramientas y maquinaria , todo ello , pensado para que las playas puedan seguir siendo un reclamo turístico , pero al mismo tiempo , se puedan mantener lo más cerca posible de su estado natural .
En este sentido , destacamos la propuesta de Diputación de Cádiz y el Colegio Oficial de Ambientólogos de Andalucía de creación de un curso de formación para gestores y trabajadores de playas de los diferentes ayuntamientos de la costa gaditana .
