One thousand cyclists decked out in lights , costumes and music take up a lot of road . But that ’ s the goal of “ Critical Mass ”, to occupy the streets in a joyful , spontaneous call to action for urban cycling . Critical Mass has been described as a political protest ride , an organized coincidence or a monthly celebration to take back the streets for human powered movement . Currently it is active in over 300 cities world wide , including 25 cities in Spain . Campo de Gibraltar wants to be the next location for the Spanish wave of Critical Mass .
Bike tours with hundreds of participants existed in Sweden in the 1970s . But the first ride within the Critical Mass movement occurred in San Francisco in 1992 . This initial event gathered just a few cyclists under the name Commute Clot . But soon after some of these cyclists attended a screening of Ted White ’ s documentary Return of the Scorcher , about bike culture in the Netherlands and China in comparison with that of the United States . The film showed how in China , both motorists and cyclists have an “ understood ” method of negotiating intersections without signals . Bikes queue up at these intersections until the number reaches a “ critical mass ”, at which point the cyclists move together through the intersection . The San Francisco cyclists were inspired so the collective action and the term “ Critical Mass ” was born .
The Madrid Chapter provides a role model for what Critical Mass could look like in Campo de Gibraltar . The last Thursday of every month hundreds of Madrid ’ s cyclists meet in Cibeles for a night ride , - both reclaiming the streets from cars and celebrating the cyclist lifestyle . It ’ s a standing call , no registration , no organization , cyclists congregate at the same time and place each month to ride together .
It ’ s based on the old adage of “ safety in numbers ”. The cyclists move in a tight group so that cars don ’ t enter the formation . Side streets are blocked by individual cyclists to ensure the peloton passes safely . The group rides between 10 and 15 km occupying the entire car lane , but leaving bus lanes free . Critical Mass is not an association or any type of official organization . It ’ s a group of individuals acting together .

El último jueves de cada mes , cientos de ciclistas madrileños se reúnen en Cibeles para dar un paseo nocturno , tanto para reclamar las calles a los coches como para celebrar el estilo de vida ciclista . Es una convocatoria permanente , sin inscripciones ni organización , los ciclistas se reúnen a la misma hora y en el mismo lugar cada mes para pedalear juntos .
Se basa en el viejo adagio de « la seguridad en el número ». Los ciclistas se mueven en un grupo cerrado para que los coches no entren en la formación . Las calles laterales son bloqueadas por ciclistas individuales para garantizar el paso seguro del pelotón . El grupo recorre entre 10 y 15 km ocupando todo el carril de los coches , pero dejando libres los carriles de los autobuses . La Masa Crítica no es una
