Water bodies such as ponds are an attractive feature of gardens and the summer is the best season for flowering aquatic plants in horticulture . Waterlilies flower during the summer , but there are other species too . The Sacred Lotus is found across Asia and Australasia , although it is thought to be originally native across northern India to Indochina , having been introduced elsewhere . It is an exceptionally attractive plant for garden ponds . The leaves have a ‘ superhydrophobic ’ quality , with water droplets simply rolling off them like droplets of mercury . The Sacred Lotus produces extremely attractive flowers during the summer and and these are considered the national flower of India and Vietnam . The very curious seed pods are , in their own way , every bit as striking as the flowers and the seeds , which are edible , an remain viable for many years if conditions are suitable . The seeds survive well in temporary water bodies , even some that remain dry for years . The seeds will rehydrate and germinate once flooding occurs . As an extreme example , seeds recovered from a dry lake bed and germinated in China were estimated to be around 1300 years old !
