EU COURT REPRIMAND GOVERNMENT FOR DOÑANA WATER VIOLATIONS
The European Court of Justice has reprimanded Spain for excessive extractions of groundwater at
Doñana National Park following a complaint submitted by WWF-Spain and filed by the European Commission in 2019 .
The EU court found that the Spanish Government has infringed the EU Water Framework Directive and Habitat Directive by allowing water to be diverted for tourist industry use . Farmers had also illegally built wells for intensive strawberry production .
Over the last 20 years , WWF-Spain has discovered , mapped out and condemned 1,000 illegal wells and over 3,000 hectares of crops that have contributed towards the drying out of the park ’ s aquifers . Protecting the important marsh and wetlands of Doñana are crucial for the survival of the parks many plant and animal species .
Doñana is one of Spain ’ s largest natural parks and is considered the most important wetland reserve in Europe . This vast , beautiful area spreads across the three provinces of Cadiz , Huelva and Seville and its diverse ecosystems consist of wetlands , dunes , marshlands , lagoons , pine groves and beaches .
