For many years, citizens all over the world have been living with a common enemy that has been silently taking over our parks, our beaches, our seas and oceans, our rivers... an enemy called littering that degrades our landscapes, pollutes our environments and directly affects all living beings.
Our ecosystems are suffering the consequences of the accumulation of waste, a problem caused mainly by humans, which threatens biodiversity and before which many organizations have not been able to close their eyes and have decided to act.
Among them is the LIBERA Project, created by SEO / BirdLife in alliance with Ecoembes, a large social movement that since 2017 has been working to put an end to one of the greatest environmental threats we suffer in the natural spaces of our country: littering.“ There is an urgent need to raise public awareness of this serious problem, which is not only aesthetic, but also environmental,” says Sara Güemes, coordinator of Ecoembes’ LIBERA Project.
With this objective of mobilizing citizens and raising awareness of the importance of keeping natural spaces free of litter, LIBERA carries out different actions to promote citizen participation, encouraging people to go out to their nearest spaces and pick up abandoned rubbish. Thus, every June they celebrate“ 1m2 against litter”, a large collaborative waste collection that, in the last edition, brought together 11,000 volunteers and collected 114 tons in 1,077 points throughout Spain.
“ The great response from citizens shows that it is necessary, and so they demand, another model of production and consumption in which waste reduction should be the priority. We want healthy natural environments, free of littering and the pollutants that derive from it,” says Miguel Muñoz, coordinator of the LIBERA Project of SEO / BirdLife.
This response is also received in the campaigns organized in the rest of 1m 2 for the environments:“ 1m 2 for the Beaches and the Seas”,“ 1m 2 for the Rivers, Reservoirs and Swamps” and“ 1m 2 for the Countryside, the Mountains and the Forests” in which, in addition to the collection of waste, it also collects citizen science data to learn more about the origin, composition and location of the littering through its characterization.

Desde hace muchos años, los ciudadanos de todo el mundo conviven con un enemigo común que, silenciosamente, se va apropiando de nuestros parques, nuestras playas, nuestros mares y océanos, nuestros ríos … un enemigo llamado basuraleza que degrada los paisajes, contamina nuestros entornos y afecta de manera directa a todos los seres vivos.
Nuestros ecosistemas están sufriendo las consecuencias de la acumulación de residuos, un problema causado, principalmente, por el ser humano, que amenaza la biodiversidad y ante el que muchas organizaciones no han podido cerrar los ojos y han decidido actuar.
Entre ellas está el Proyecto LIBERA, creado por SEO / BirdLife en alianza con Ecoembes, un gran movimiento social que desde el 2017 trabaja para poner fin a una de las mayores amenazas ambientales que sufrimos en los espacios naturales de nuestro país: la basuraleza. « Hay una urgente necesidad de concienciar a la población sobre este grave problema, que no es solo estético, sino también ambiental », afirma Sara Güemes, coordinadora del Proyecto LI- BERA de Ecoembes.
Con este objetivo de movilizar a la ciudadanía y concienciarla sobre la importancia de mantener los espacios naturales libres de basura, LIBERA lleva a cabo diferentes acciones para impulsar la participación ciudadana, animando a la gente a salir a sus espacios más cercanos y recoger la basuraleza abandonada. Así, todos los meses de junio celebran « 1m 2 contra la basuraleza », una gran recogida colaborativa de residuos que, en la última edición ha congregado a 11.000 voluntarios y recogido 114 toneladas en 1.077 puntos de toda España.
« La gran respuesta de la ciudadanía constata que es necesario, y así lo demandan, otro modelo de producción y consumo en el que la reducción de residuos debe ser la prioridad. Queremos unos entornos naturales sanos, libres de basuraleza y de los contaminantes que se derivan de ella », asegura Miguel Muñoz, coordinador del Proyecto LIBERA de SEO / BirdLife.
