They also recognize and distinguish between human individuals and modify their behavior depending on whether they " like " particular people . Cuttlefish , close relatives of octopuses , appear to have REM sleep similar to humans and have been shown to have the ability to count .
Decapods
While there has been little research on the emotional states of decapods , including crabs and lobsters , there is evidence that they feel and are aware of pain . Crabs exhibited the following criteria of pain-sensitive awareness : avoidance learning , trade-offs between pain avoidance and other requirements , responsiveness to opioid analgesics , and high cognitive abilities . In one experiment , hermit crabs with a high-quality shell resisted higher levels of pain ( electric shocks ) to keep the shell . But they abandoned the lower quality shells . This motivational trade-off indicates an awareness of pain awareness and the ability to measure the consequences of experiencing continued pain versus losing their coveted protective resource .
The interpretation of sentience
Accepting the idea of sentience within the scientific community is a major challenge , but the cost of not accepting this evidence is unacceptable and can be determined by the lives of millions of animals ( thinking and feeling beings ) who suffer at the hands of experimenters who see fit to recognize their feelings and consciousness only when it is convenient .
Animal sentience is often considered to be a complex , ill-defined , subjective and abstract concept , which generates as many questions as answers . If you were to ask different people about their views on animal sentience , you would get different answers . If you ask the owner of a dog or a cat if they have feelings , they would probably tell stories about how their animals comfort them or how they learn to perform certain tricks . The farmer who works closely with his animals will describe how one cow likes to be tickled behind the ear , and how another is shy and cautious .
