Amphibians
As in the rest of vertebrates , amphibians are scientifically considered to be sentient beings . The results of Lambert , Ewin and D ' Cruze show that in the scientific literature it is assumed that amphibians are capable of experiencing affective states such as pain or fear .
The commercialization of nonhuman animals can be associated with pockets of suffering that emerge not only from the commercial process but also from the restrictions that captivity can impose . Amphibians have become a popular " exotic pet " around the world . In fact , the international trade in " exotic pets " is responsible for the purchase and sale of millions of amphibians each year ( Harrington et al ., 2021 ). Recent estimates suggest that about 1200 amphibian species are part of the international trade , representing 17 % of all known amphibian species on the planet ( Hughes et al ., 2021 ). In addition , amphibians are also exploited for biomedical research , traditional medicine , and consumption ( Gerson , 2021 ; Hughes et al ., 2021 ; Little et al ., 2021 ). Amphibian trade is subject to legal and illegal markets and is associated with potential problems such as pressure on wild-living populations ( Harrington et al ., 2021 ; Hughes et al ., 2021 ) or the spread of allochthonous species and infectious diseases ( Can et al ., 2019 ;
Synteny in invertebrates
The study of sentience in invertebrates is relevant from an ethical and legal perspective . It seems pertinent to insist that sentience deserves a moral consideration , which cements the relational models we establish with other animals in a way that ensures their welfare and protects them from suffering .
Cephalopods
Octopuses externalize pain and distress , demonstrate complex cognitive abilities , and are able to connect perceptual experiences to memory and retain long-term memories . They also display a variety of emotions through changes in their skin coloration and patterns ( although the meaning of many of these patterns is still speculative ) and demonstrate play behavior . They may learn to open jars to remove crabs and to develop and use tools .
