This fact is absolutely familiar to us , as it is part of the normalized scenario with which we have lived for a few tens of centuries , ever since human beings have been considered as such . However , we are the recent guests in this ancient host world , whose origin dates back several billion years . So much so that we currently find ourselves coexisting with animals that were already present in this house of ours , as historical hosts for many millions of years before us . With some of these neighbors we share so many similarities that we can only marvel at their undeniable capacity for survival . However , without even admitting that they might possess a hint of " quality intelligence " we turn them , without any moral qualms , into everyday " objects " coveted for our enjoyment , food and experimentation .
This relationship with animals , in many cases expressed in the form of non-consensual and even unnecessary exploitation , is part of our history . It can be said that the first hominids were hunters , making use of their greater dexterity with their hands and the bipedalism they eventually acquired . They were eager to obtain meat , which was precisely what brought about a decisive change at the cerebral level , increasing its volume significantly , to the point of achieving a 30 % increase in encephalic capacity in only half a million years .
This exploitation , and in many cases exploitation , of our animal hosts has accompanied us throughout our evolutionary process . As we have advanced in time , we have progressed in an inversely proportional way with respect to the adequate treatment we should give them . In this way , we have gone from being hunters ( and gatherers ) out of necessity to exploiters out of a hobby ; and all in a very short period of time that could be counted in a few tens of thousands of years , that is , a fraction of the time span in which life is present on this planet of ours ( of all animals and plants ).
In this transition over time , concerns have arisen regarding the way in which we relate to other animals . These concerns have materialized in manifestos , demands , mobilizations and even regulations . Certain historical moments have been a point of reference in terms of the materialization of changes in this sense . Some of these moments are particu- o de cómo son consideradas sus capacidades mentales ( Knight , Nunkoosing y Vrij , 2003 ). Sin embargo , cuando se observa la manera en que tratamos a los animales criados para alimentación , experimentación o entretenimiento , se aprecia con claridad la importancia de estas perspectivas y su predominio .
Especismo
El término « especismo » hace alusión a una discriminación basada en la especie . La forma de especismo más común es el antropocentrismo , que es básicamente la creencia de que sólo los seres humanos tienen valor moral , o que nuestros intereses están por encima de los intereses de aquellos individuos que no sean humanos .
El especismo rechaza , por tanto , el valor inherente de los individuos pertenecientes a otras especies animales y solamente se les otorga un simple valor instrumental .
El término « especismo » ( speciesism ) apareció por primera vez en el año 1970 en un texto publicado por el psicólogo inglés Richard D . Ryder , titulado Experiments on Animals . En este artículo , el autor no definía el concepto o sus implicaciones éticas ; sino que se limitaba a disertar acerca de la experimentación animal y el sufrimiento asociado a dichas prácticas . Desde 1986 , el especismo está definido en el Diccionario de Oxford como « La asunción de superioridad humana que lleva a la explotación animal ».
El vínculo entre animales humanos y no humanos
La particular historia del Ser humano , muy breve por cierto en términos histórico-temporales , está identificada por la estrecha vinculación con el resto de los animales de su entorno .
Ajenos al conocimiento que actualmente poseemos sobre la sintiencia de estos vecinos , también animales como nosotros , nuestros antepasados les confirieron la condición de recurso realmente valioso . Tal fue este valor otorgado , sin ningún tipo de atención éticamente preventiva sobre esta unilateral decisión , que se ha llegado a construir todo un complejo mundo social y económico sostenido en buena medida sobre estos seres vivos .
Este hecho nos resulta absolutamente familiar , puesto que forma parte del escenario normalizado
