through international agreements , which is an explicit contradiction that , however , inexplicably goes unnoticed even by the institutions that should ensure a coherent legal framework .
On the other hand , there is also knowledge of the lethality on people caused by firearms used for activities related to the environment , since thanks to the Government Response formulated during August 2020 , visibility was given to the fact that during the period of time between January 1 and September 6 of this same year 2020 , the number of non-lethal victims , existing in Spain , as a result of gunfire from weapons used in hunting activity , rose to the surprising figure of 605 people , or what is the same 2.42 victims per day . And it was even possible to know that in this same period of time the chilling figure of 51 deaths of people was registered , one death every five days , also as a consequence of hunting activity .
Now , what is the relationship between these three concepts and suicide ? Undoubtedly , this is a question that is not usually asked , but it should not be ignored , since far from being a trivial issue , it shows the scope and importance of a reality that is rarely made visible and addressed , precisely because it highlights the significant dimension that can be acquired by the possession of weapons , even if it is for sporting or recreational purposes .
First of all , it should be borne in mind that suicide is the leading cause of unnatural death in Spain , with an incidence so notable and outstanding that it is more than double that of traffic accidents , although the information that finally ends up permeating public opinion is so meager that it is hardly paid attention to . According to the 2019 report of Epidemiology and Toxicology of Suicide Deaths , the number of deaths by suicide rose during this year to 3,671 , according to the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences , of which 1,822 ( 37.2 %) were considered violent suicides .
In relation to the subject that concerns us , of the total number of suicides during this year 2019 , 4.8 % correspond to those caused by firearms .
Although there is no exact figure on the number of suicides committed with a federally licensed firearm , it is known that a significant number are committed , mainly in the male population , with a shotgun . Some studies even point out that the shotgun is used for sobre otras de menor porte . Igualmente debe tenerse en cuenta que , en nuestro país , un buen número de especies catalogadas como cinegéticas son a su vez protegidas por normativas a las que España se ha adherido mediante convenios internacionales , suponiendo una explícita contradicción que , sin embargo , pasa inexplicablemente desapercibida incluso para las instituciones que debieran velar por asegurar un marco jurídico de coherencia .
Por otro lado , también se tiene conocimiento de la letalidad sobre las personas provocada por las armas de fuego utilizadas para actividades relacionadas con el medio ambiente , ya que gracias a la Respuesta del Gobierno formulada durante agosto de 2020 se dio visibilidad al hecho de que durante el período de tiempo comprendido entre el 1 de enero y 6 de septiembre de este mismo año 2020 , el número de víctimas no letales , existentes en España , como consecuencia de disparo proveniente de armas usadas en la actividad cinegética , se elevó a la sorprendente cifra de 605 personas , o lo que es lo mismo 2,42 víctimas por día . E incluso se pudo saber que en este mismo período de tiempo se registró la escalofriante cifra de 51 muertes de personas , una muerte cada cinco días , también como consecuencia de la actividad cinegética .
Ahora bien , ¿ que relación tienen estos tres conceptos con el suicidio ? Sin duda esta es una pregunta que no suele formularse habitualmente , pero que igualmente no debe obviarse , puesto que lejos de resultar una cuestión baladí , pone de manifiesto el alcance y trascendencia de una realidad que pocas veces se visibiliza y aborda , precisamente porque pone en evidencia la significativa dimensión que puede llegar a adquirir la posesión de armas , aunque sea con fines deportivos o recreativos .
En primer lugar debe tenerse presente que el suicidio ocupa en España la primera causa de muerte no natural , con una incidencia tan notable y destacada que supone más del doble de la que tienen los accidentes de tráfico , aunque la información que finalmente acaba permeando en la opinión pública resulta tan exigua que apenas se le presta atención .
