Priscila Herrera de Núñez told the story in her novel Un asilo en la Goajira ( 1879 ), considered the first one written in La Guajira and one of the first recorded in the Colombian Caribbean . The autobiographical novel is set against the backdrop of the 1867 confrontations between two old Colombian rival cities , Santa Marta and Riohacha . Thus recently widowed and stripped of her comfortable life in the city , the beautiful Priscila , along with her daughter María and her baby José , crossed the Calancala River to enter the desert . Helped by Alí , a Wayuu boy , they found refuge under the protective mantle of Rita , Alí ’ s mother , whom Priscila described as a remarkable Indian , very rich and with a generous and noble heart , owner of an extensive and well-populated ranchería . Priscila and her children remained safely in La Guajira for eleven years , making use of what has been called “ mestizo competence ”, understood as the ability to perform competently in different social universes . Among the indigenous people María learned to weave hammocks , blankets and hats and José to ride horses , handle the bow and arrows , the wave and the rifle . Finally , the woman and her family decided to return to Riohacha and from there to Venezuela where she felt like an expatriate in a way she had never felt in La Guajira . Priscila ’ s years of retirement made her lose her taste for society . However , this type of story is not heard in the Colombian capital , where it is considered that this place still needs a good dose of civility .
The peninsula of La Guajira is located in a green eutrophic Caribbean Sea and has been a multi-ethnic land since pre-Columbian times . The Wayuu are one of only five tribes that have survived over time and possibly the largest . Their warlike and hostile character has been known since ancient times , as they never allowed themselves to be conquered by Europeans . It seems that it is from that time that already comes to this land the seal of dangerous and is also characterized by being the most arid of all Colombia . However , this rugged region was divided between Colombia and Venezuela during the independence period , although the indigenous peoples yes sin camello pero con un 4x4 aparecen entre las arenas y , sin dudarlo un momento , ofrecen ayuda . Entre los indígenas María aprendió a tejer hamacas , mantas y sombreros y José a montar a caballo , manejar el arco y las flechas , la onda y el fusil . Finalmente la mujer con su familia decidió regresar a Riohacha y de ahí a Venezuela donde se sintió expatriada como no se había sentido en La Guajira . A Priscila los años de retiro le hicieron perder el gusto por la sociedad . Sin embargo , este tipo de historias no se escuchan en la capital colombiana , donde se considera que este lugar aún precisa de una buena dosis de civismo .
La península de La Guajira se adentra en un Mar Caribe de color verde eutrófico y es tierra multiétnica desde épocas precolombinas . Los Wayuu son una de las solo cinco tribus que han sobrevivido a lo largo del tiempo y posiblemente la más numerosa .
