Species of plants with bulbous roots can have some of the most beautiful flowers in the plant kingdom . Many are also easy to cultivate , making them ideal plants for the garden . South Africa has among the most diverse bulb floras in the world and it is therefore not surprising that so many of the bulbs that we use in gardening are South African in origin , especially because parts of South Africa have a climate that is very similar to the Mediterranean . The genus Clivia belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae , which includes daffodils . The most common species in cultivation by far is the Natal Lily . Further north in Europe they are grown indoors due to their sensitivity to winter temperatures , but in Gibraltar the species thrives outdoors . Whilst most flowering bulbs need plenty of sunshine , the Natal Lily makes its home in forests and woodland habitats of eastern South Africa and Swaziland , making it ideal for areas with shade , where their very striking flowers can bring much-needed colour . These are normally red , but there are also orange and yellow-flowered varieties . Furthermore , they can be remarkably drought-tolerant , thus surviving our summer conditions well . They are equally at home in pots or planting beds .

Sudáfrica cuenta con una de las floras de bulbos más variadas del mundo , por lo que no es de extrañar que muchos de los bulbos que utilizamos en jardinería sean de origen sudafricano , sobre todo porque algunas partes de Sudáfrica tienen un clima muy parecido al del Mediterráneo . El género Clivia pertenece a la familia Amaryllidaceae , que incluye los narcisos . La especie más cultivada , con diferencia , es el lirio de Natal . En el norte de Europa se cultivan en interiores debido a su sensibilidad a las temperaturas invernales , pero en Gibraltar la especie prospera al aire libre . Mientras que la mayoría de los bulbos en flor necesitan mucho sol , el lirio de Natal se encuentra en los bosques y hábitats boscosos del este de Sudáfrica y Suazilandia , por lo que es ideal para zonas con sombra , donde sus llamativas flores pueden aportar el color que tanto necesitan . Normalmente son rojas , pero también hay variedades con flores naranjas y amarillas . Además , pueden ser notablemente tolerantes a la sequía , por lo que sobreviven bien a nuestras condiciones estivales . Se encuentran igualmente a gusto en macetas o en parterres .
