MINISTER ATTENDS VIRTUAL CLIMATE CHANGE MEETING
In preparation for the COP26 Climate Change Summit , the Minister for Sustainability , Environment and Climate Change , Dr John Cortes took part in a virtual Climate Change meeting organised by the British Embassy in Rome and the Italian Environment Ministry . Dr Cortes attended as both Gibraltar Environment Minister and as the Chair of the UK Overseas Territories ’ Environment Ministers ’ Council .
COP26 , or the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference , is due to be held in November in Glasgow and will be co-hosted by Italy and the UK .
The virtual meetings ’ theme was Nature , our
Earth and the adaptation & resilience required for our Future : “ One Earth One Future ”. Participants from around the world discussed and planned how to achieve the main goal of COP26 , which is to encourage greater action to preserve ecosystems and keep countries , communities and people safe from the impacts of climate change ’.
Some of the topics discussed included : increasing awareness of the links between sustainability , climate change adaptation and building resilience , and encouraging countries and organisations to share information on challenges and best practice .
A primary aim is to reimagine global economic models in a way that enhances and protects biodiversity , as outlined in the Dasgupta Report on the Economics of Biodiversity , and to implement nature-based solutions to the climate crisis .
Dr Cortes ’ contribution focused on the global need to safeguard against economic actions following the COVID-19 pandemic that are harmful to the environment , climate change and biodiversity .
