Más árboles plantados en los alrededores de Gibraltar .
A pesar de que la pandemia del COVID-19 ha estado en primera línea durante el último año , los contratistas del Departamento de Medio Ambiente y Cambio Climático han continuado con los planes del Gobierno para plantar más árboles en los alrededores de Gibraltar .
Entre noviembre y febrero se plantaron un total de 69 árboles de 12 especies diferentes . Doce de ellos fueron árboles reubicados o sustitutivos de los que se perdieron . Esto supone un aumento neto de 57 árboles en todo Gibraltar .
El otoño y el principio de la primavera en el Mediterráneo ofrecen las mejores condiciones climáticas para plantar nuevos árboles , debido a las temperaturas más frescas y al aumento de las lluvias .
La mayoría de los nuevos árboles están en el nuevo Parque del Centro , donde se han plantado un total de 47 . El resto están en zonas como Red Sands Road , el cementerio de Trafalgar y Governor ’ s Parade .
El Ministro de Medio Ambiente , el Honorable Prof . John Cortes , dijo : “ Estamos trabajando constantemente para aumentar el número de árboles en todo Gibraltar , de acuerdo con nuestro objetivo de Gibraltar Verde . Estoy muy satisfecho de que hayamos podido aumentar el número de árboles en nuestra zona urbana en tantos . Seguiremos buscando nuevos lugares donde podamos añadir más ”.
GOVERNOR AND DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER VISIT LATEST FIND AT NORTHERN DEFENCES
The Governor of Gibraltar Vice-Admiral Sir David Steel visited the Northern Defences for the first time and shown some of the recent discoveries found during the refurbishment project . He was joined by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia and Project Director Carl Viagas .
The Northern Defences are comprised of several defensive lines , batteries and galleries , used over centuries to protect Gibraltar from attacks from the north . Unfortunately , the area was abandoned for many decades , with mountains of rubble and rubbish allowed to accumulate and parts of the impressive fortifications falling into disrepair . However , in the last few years , a clean-up and recovery project has been underway with hundreds of tonnes of debris removed .
Thanks to these efforts , there have been several discoveries . A new defensive wall , Hanover Line ( or El Muro de San Jose ), was unearthed during the clean-up , dating back to 1627 . In November last year , the base of the Round Tower was also found . The most recent find is a gallery formed in the shape of an amphitheatre discovered near Forbes Battery . Constructed in 1789 , Amphitheatre Gallery offers a commanding view over the lower defensive lines .
The Deputy Chief Minister , Dr Joseph Garcia , said , “ I am delighted with this latest find and to be able to share it with the Governor . It was a real pleasure to welcome him to the Northern Defences and to be able to experience the continuing progress with this world-class set of fortifications . The work that Carl has led so ably over the last few years is now starting to pay dividends with new finds of historical importance . It is remarkable how layer after layer of military ingenuity is being uncovered within such an area . The approach of the Government in this area has the dual advantage of exposing both a historical site and a leisure area in the centre of town ” .

El Gobernador de Gibraltar , Vicealmirante Sir David Steel , visitó por primera vez las Defensas del Norte y mostró algunos de los recientes descubrimientos encontrados durante el proyecto de remodelación .
