rock allowing for lines of gun embrasures to be built.
The full extent of these defences covers the en-
tire north side of the Rock, from Princess Caroline’s
Battery in the Upper Rock, down to the Great Siege
Tunnels and all the way to Landport and the Grand
Battery. The clean-up project focused on the lower
parts of the galleries which are comprised of the
Kings Lines, Queens Lines and Princes lines.
Climbing upward and stopping to admire the views
along the way, you get a good sense of the strategic
thought that went into their construction. Through
the expanse of dark tunnels that allowed soldiers hi-
dden routes when under fire, windowed galleries and
fall back positions, and the expansive views on each
tier. Every part of the Rocks natural landscape was
used to maximise these defences, ensuring all angles
were covered from a series of deliberately placed
vantage points.
When the cleanup began in 2015, no one really
knew what to expect or what they would find. Due to
the amount of vegetation that had engulfed certain
areas and the mountains of rubble that had obscured
and denied access to parts of the lines for decades,
the condition of the defences were unknown. Carl,
with the support of a main contractor and volunteers
such as the Royal Engineers, began their efforts at
Granada Gate and started to find that the majority of
its structures were still intact. The next stage was the
Princes lines, and finally the Kings and Queens Lines
which were the most logistically challenging of the
three stages.
What has been revealed is a wealth of areas that
encapsulate how each occupying force has altered
the defences over the centuries. From original Moo-
rish walls that have been repaired or changed by
the Spanish and British, embrasures that have been
adapted over time, batteries that have been expan-
ded to accommodate heavy gun artillery and search
light posts for World War II. In a brief snapshot you
can see a thousand years of military history unfold
before your very eyes, sights that you would be hard
pressed to find anywhere else in the world.
Examples of this are the Star Chamber in the cen-
tre of the tunnels that span the length of lines. Origi-
nally the hub of tunneling operations in the 1700s, it
was later used as one of the communications centres
for Operation Torch. Bunkers on the Princes Lines

ban intactas. La siguiente etapa fueron las líneas
Princes, y finalmente las líneas del Rey y de la Reina,
fueron los que mas problemas logisticos dieron.
Lo que se ha revelado es una gran cantidad de
áreas que resumen cómo cada fuerza de ocupación
ha alterado las defensas a lo largo de los siglos. Des-
de muros moriscos originales que han sido reparados
o modificados por los españoles y británicos, trone-
ras que se han adaptado con el tiempo y baterías que
se han ampliado para acomodar artillería de armas
pesadas y buscar postes ligeros para la Segunda
Guerra Mundial. En una breve instantánea, puede
ver mil años de historia militar desplegándose ante
sus propios ojos, vistas que difícilmente encontrará
en cualquier otro lugar del mundo.Ejemplos de esto
son la Cámara Estrella en el centro de los túneles
que abarcan la longitud de las líneas. El centro de
operaciones de túneles del siglo XVIII, se usó con
posterioridad como uno de los centros de comunica-
ciones para la Operación Antorcha. Los bunkers en
Princes Lines muestran modificaciones ad hoc, don-
de se agregaron durante la Segunda Guerra Mun-
dial pesadas tanto puertas de acero como techos,
para una cubierta adicional. También se han hecho
nuevos descubrimientos, que se cree data del siglo
XVII, en concreto un muro defensivo que ahora puede
verse cómo se eleva, pasado el castillo morisco.
¿Qué es lo siguiente?
Esta área ofrece mucho en términos de visitas histó-
ricas, sumándole quizás más exhibiciones interactivas
y elementos audiovisuales que, sin duda, atraerá a
ciudadanos y foráneos por igual. Pero como discuti-
mos con Carl, su potencial es mucho mayor. Con pro-
yectos anteriores, como el uso de Kings Bastion como
un centro de ocio que ha tenido tanto éxito, sería fan-
tástico ver esta parte de Gibraltar utilizada de una ma-
nera que ofrezca nuevas y emocionantes actividades
de ocio que permita a los ciudadanos locales disfrutar
repetidamente de sus espacios. Los túneles ya han
