While the development was not specifically aimed at veterans , they “ are highly visible examples of post-war housing for returning veterans .” Financial help from the G . I . Bill , along with FFHA financing , assisted many in buying the homes .
While garages and driveways were not part of the original plans of the development , they soon began appearing in the neighborhood . Nine garages are considered contributing resources to the historic district as they appear to be built shortly after the houses and retain the same style and scale . “ These garages demonstrate the growing importance of the automobile following World War II ,” the nomination states .
“ The location is basically unchanged since the completion of the houses and the paving of the streets and sidewalks in 1946 ,” the nomination reads . “ The original design of the street , lots and space has not been changed … It truly has a sense of time and place .”
The district focuses on the 1200 blocks of North Fellows Avenue and North Elm Street . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010 .
