Though a residential neighborhood , the Vogel Place Historic District was anchored by the St . Joseph Hospital until its recent demolition .

It was developed in the early 20th century , platted on land owned by E . B . and Elizabeth Vogel , according to “ Ottumwa ’ s Historic Treasures ,” a 2013 report compiled by the Ottumwa Historic Preservation Commission . It was given to their daughters following E . B .’ s death , and they began selling lots in 1908 .
The neighborhood was aided by the Ottumwa Electric Railroad Line , which ran by Vogel Place on Court Street . Its location next to the country club also made it an attractive place to live . Much of the district was built in the 1920s and 1930s .
Mary Stewart , a commission member , said she remembers the portion of Court Street located in the district as “ Pill Row ” due to the number of physicians from St . Joseph ’ s that reportedly lived there at the time .
“ The houses are typical middle-class residences ,” the 2013 report states . “ Vogel Place is one of the first neighborhoods where garages were considered to be an important part of the development . Small garages dotted the rear of almost every lot in the addition .”
The 1920s saw many Colonial Revival homes in the district . Other popular architectural styles include Romantic Revival , American Four Square , bungalow / craftsman and Tudor Revival . Two homes in the district are unique cement block houses .
The district also is home to the former St . Joseph Hospital site , which is to be developed into St . Joseph
Square , a church and the brick paved street along Vogel Avenue . Several distinctive driveways are also included in the designation , according to the commission ’ s report .
The district encompasses 31.6 acres , with the core of it being the 101 lots in the Vogel Place Addition . It includes the east-west streets of East Alta Vista Avenue , Vogel Avenue and Vanness Avenue . It also includes eight residences along the west side of Court Street between Vanness Avenue and Hawthorne Drive . It is bordered on the south by Ottumwa Cemetery and the country club on the north . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 .
