New framework supports development of NMAHP healthcare support workers at levels 2-4 in Scotland
NHS Education for Scotland ( NES ) was commissioned by the Scottish Government to undertake a review of career pathways for healthcare support workers working at levels 2-4 of the NHS Career Framework for Health in health and social care within NHS Scotland .
The aim of the commission was to scope and recommend a nationally agreed framework to support definition of healthcare support worker roles , career progression and development through education and training , with a focus on how they support registered staff . In due course , the framework will be incorporated into the NMAHP Development Framework .
Dr Nikki Daniels , RCOT Professional Development Manager , has been involved in the development of this framework as part of the commission ’ s subgroup since the work commenced at the end of 2021 .
She says : ‘ Support workers play a valuable role in delivering safe and effective care to those who access occupational therapy services . We absolutely recognise and value their skills and experience , so we are delighted to see the launch of this framework .
‘ It provides clarity of the role and contribution of support workers at each level and offers a clear structure to help support workers map out their learning and development goals .’
Support workers in Scotland can access a range of learning resources and events to support their development across the four pillars of practice via the NHS Education For Scotland ( NES ) Support Worker Central platform .
RCOT is also committed to supporting the development of our unregistered workforce . It recently formed a project advisory group to help it to grow its resources and activities for the support workforce , promote their role and contribution and address the learning and development needs of both support workers and those responsible for supporting them in their roles .
