The importance of being human
Linda Jones talks about her own experience of volunteering and the positive impact it has on building transferable life skills and boosting self-image and self-esteem
Each June sees the celebration of Volunteers ’ Week , during which the effort and commitment of volunteers across the UK is highlighted . Since 1984 , the event has showcased the value that volunteers , and the organisations that support them , contribute to communities , including an estimated £ 22.6 billion for UK charities ( www . volunteersweek . org . uk ).
As one of the estimated 20.1 million volunteers in the UK , I feel fortunate to have been a part of the Oxford University Museums Volunteer Service for several years now ; I value the contribution it has made to my own life , as well as allowing me to support others in accessing the many social , cultural and educational experiences that the Volunteers Service co-ordinates , reaching out to children , families , older adults , schools and community groups within Oxfordshire .
