Information was collected on : the type of injury sustained , for example orthopaedic , head injury , or both ; if there was a requirement for equipment provision for discharge , and if this was in place for discharge ; and those offered and those who accepted a follow-up phone call and the outcome of this .
The Parent Care Measure ( PCM ) can be used to gain the views of the child or parent attending AHP services . It is a patient centred measure of relational empathy and a score given anonymously by the parent or child .
In occupational therapy it is routinely given out to gain the views of the child or parent on the quality of interaction with their occupational therapist .
A process folder was compiled for the occupational therapy team , which included information on initial triage and assessment documentation , equipment ordering processes , including crisis delivery , contact information for local authority areas and outcome measure information .
The multidisciplinary team met to compile relevant documentation and review outcome measures . The admission rehabilitation plan was established , to be completed within the first 72 hours , and the discharge rehabilitation plan , with information for parents , child and community staff .
Outcome measures were reviewed and agreed to collate the scoring of the PTA , Rehab Complexity Scale , Therapy Outcome Measures ( TOMs ) and Goal Attainment Scaling ( GAS ) goals .
A satellite store for equipment provision was identified as a requirement to aid discharge planning in particular same day or next day discharges .

Instead of asking parents / carers to drive to the equipment store to collect or have it delivered to their home , a store was set up indicated that the
within the department therapist was excellent in to house a small stock showing care and compassion of equipment and a and being positive process developed to have pieces reimbursed from the Edinburgh Council Store .
In line with the Scottish Ready to Act framework , prevention ideas were tested . First , testing a home safety talk to parents whose child attends an Edinburgh Early Years Centre ; this was completed in conjunction with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents ( RoSPA ).
It is delivered in the form of a 30-minute faceto-face presentation , covering the risks around falls , burns , choking and suffocating , poisoning , drowning and how to prevent these .
The aim being to highlight risks and inform parents / carers of ways in which they can reduce the risk of accidental injury in the home . At the end of the session , attendees are given a ‘ Keeping Kids Safe ’ pack and invited to fill out a feedback form .
Results and outcomes from the first year
In year one , there were 67 new trauma cases , where 80 % were identified by occupational therapy staff screening wards on the electronic patient management system ; some of these cases could have potentially been missed prior to the setting up of the major trauma service .
We also found that 72 % of cases that required occupational therapy input had a lower limb injury and 90 % of these cases required adaptive equipment for discharge to facilitate independence in activity of daily living skills and functional transfers .
We therefore concluded it ’ s essential that children or young people who have sustained a
