VR : a new tool for occupational therapists ?

Michael McManus reflects on the use of a virtual reality project in an inpatient forensic mental health service and considers the potential benefit these tools can provide to patients with complex mental illness .

V irtual reality ( VR ) provides people with access to controlled and immersive environments . The use of virtual reality as a therapeutic tool has grown in popularity , with enhanced technology enabling users to experience a vast range of places in the comfort of the home .

We have complete autonomy over the places we select , the time of day we are transported to , the sounds we hear and the type of activity we engage with .
While early studies have pointed to the potential benefits of virtual reality for people experiencing anxiety disorders , with reports highlighting that engagement can alleviate stress , improve mood and ability to self-regulate , there remains a limited evidence base for its application within inpatient mental health services .
Why forensic mental health ?
I have been working in secure hospitals and prison settings for the past four years and have been involved in strategies to motivate and reduce the levels of occupational deprivation experienced by service users .
I currently work within a forensic service that comprises seven wards , including an assessment unit , acute , rehabilitation , female and low secure ward .
