Shaping occupational therapy in children ’ s social care
This quote from one family is what everything is about for us : ‘… new bed … amazing … [ they have ] been sleeping through the night in it … thank you , thank you thank you .’ On a daily basis we strive to create these moments , where we can support positive change in the lives of our families who care for children and young people with disabilities . Essex County Council provides a county-wide occupational therapy service for children and young people aged between the ages of nought and 25 years , who have a substantial and long-term disability .. The council took direction from RCOT in 2011 , when it published a position statement on social care occupational therapy for children , young people and families , to move the occupational therapy social care service for children and young people out of adult services and into children ’ s social care .

The RCOT position statement was clear and strong in its assertion that ‘[ RCOT ] believes that the continuation of occupational therapists assessing children within adult social care services is unacceptable and compromises the quality and effectiveness of occupational therapy provision ’.
