Phoenix Upper Limb Studio at the National Spinal Injuries Centre , Stoke Mandeville Hospital , has been highly commended in the Acute Sector Innovation of the Year category at HSJ Awards 2021 .
Standing out in a very impressive seven-strong shortlist , the Phoenix Upper Limb Studio was highly commended due to its focus on excellence , conscientious hard work and the demonstrable positive impact that its project has within the health and social care sectors .
The inspiring initiative , which has been running for seven months , provides one-to-one and group therapy for spinal cord injured patients , using a range of carefully selected rehabilitation technology in a designated purpose-built environment .
This intervention is carried out by occupational therapists specifically trained in the principles of Activity Based

Restorative Therapy , which is an important and growing area of spinal cord injury research .
It involves the use of specialist equipment to facilitate repetitive movement in order to achieve goal-based functional activity , improve patient outcomes and impact on higher levels of independence following spinal cord injury through the use of a complete technology solution for the upper limb .
Ruth Peachment , occupational therapy clinical specialist at the centre said : ‘ We are so proud to have been recognised by the HSJ Awards and highlighted as highly commended in the Acute Sector Innovation of the Year category .
‘ The recognition of this calibre means a huge amount to everyone involved in this project . We are very confident that the impact of being highly commended at the HSJ Awards will help us to continually develop and build upon a really positive and enduring legacy when we look to the future .
