Challenges Accessing Outdoor Swimming

Based on our findings , we were able to provide both specific and general recommendations to each venue around accessibility and inclusion , along with suggestions specific to the placement supervisor ’ s swim coaching business .
Carrying out this project was an invaluable placement opportunity , which gave us both a fascinating learning experience that was meaningful to us both in unique ways .
Swim coach and project supervisor Claudia Thompson says of the placement project : ‘ Working alongside the occupational therapy placement students has really developed my knowledge on what adaptations can be made to my coaching sessions to make swimming outdoors more accessible .
‘ There are many challenges with the access points at open water swim places and making sure people ’ s needs and abilities are discussed around this before the session has helped me provide the right venue for the swimmers to save any issues on the day .
‘ We discussed providing a changing tent for customers and this has been a great addition for people , giving them privacy and protection from wind and rain while they get changed , especially if the person is slower at getting out of their wet clothes .
‘ I have also purchased an easy carry stool for people whose balance or flexibility to take shoes / swim socks off is something they struggle with . Making adaptations and providing these tools has made such a difference to creating a much more comfortable environment so swimming outdoors can become much more accessible for all .
